In order 2 understand Prince's music people have 2 understand his gifts. biggrin

He is Philosophical, Visionary & Brilliant. biggrin

Because his mind is so highly philosophical, his struggle is 2 ground his thoughts & make practical use of them but it is not easy 1.

He MUST take his fertile imagination & visionary abilities & ground them in pragmatism. biggrin

His talents are many, but he makes songs about pussy and dancing, he's not Nietzsche.

AHAHAHAHAHA!!! U said PUSSY!!

Virtually every single album he's ever done has its "dirty" moments...

the difference is that now he artificially bites his tongue over supposed "curse words". I find it anything but mature. What difference does it make if the intent behind the lyric is the same? He may not "jack u off' any longer but he sure wants to 'go down south'...

I never understood this. Why can't u just see it as Prince being inspired from things that are not so dirty these days? Why do u feel like he's censoring himself? I mean he did say he stopped cursing but confused Back in the days maybe he happened to be inspired by all the sexual stuff u can think of a lot more than now, you know? He's a human and he's aged so maybe he's changed a bit?

Okay, that's all very interesting. But what if these new inspirations don't charge up that intensely creative battery of music that those old inspirations did. I mean, compare Get On The Boat to Gett Off's music. Doesn't hardly compare, does it?

Yes, but a muzzle is a muzzle. My main question is does this pulling also psychologically pull the music back also?

Oh, I do agree I would find it creepy if he still sang like a teenage perve, but my point is does this also tone the music back.

No I don't think so

I Prince does shows with a direction, not just playing music to show his skill

then any of those songs will fit

It was easier in the 1980's because he had a themed image ie Uptown Erotic City Paisley Park

so the music fit with this real-fantasy world

If he just goes out and plays the songs just to play them then it would seem out of place

But if he did a thematic show

I'm quite certain it has an effect. Instead of allowing inspiration to flow free, he must constantly "check himself" to make sure he's not crossing any personally defined restrictions.

That's a cute idea but it bears no resemblance to reality. He's still singing about the same things most of the time. His lyrical content has not greatly changed over the last 25 years... he just censors select words and phrases while singing about the exact same things. lol

No one's claiming he's not inspired by anything sexual or he's not singing about that anymore. What I'm saying is I believe it was bigger influence on him back in the day than now. Songs like Lolita, Chocolate Box, Sticky like Glue, Incense and Candles etc. from recent albums aren't as wild as Darling Nikki, Scandalous, Come, Head, Gett Off, P control, Face Down...etc. You can't possibly say he's censoring nasty women's moaning or intentionally changing lyrics from girl who's masturbating to praying. I mean can you imagine him doing another track like Orgasm lol?

I think I get it now...is it another old vs. new (good vs. crappy) argument? I don't see the connection between the dirty subject and musical quality whatsoever. Plus Gett Off isn't that much greater than Get on the Boat musically either. To me Gett Off is a hip hop song with rock edge to it. Sure it's a catchy song but it's up to personal preference isn't it? I personally think Get on the Boat is an interesting song and great dance music as well with jazzy touch. Honestly there's not much to compare as far as melody goes.

Yeah, that's how I feel. It's overthinking the flow. The music itself now feels more calculated than felt.

If I had to reduce the question, I wouldn't say it is good vs crappy, I would say it is more a question of free vs restrained from the perspective of censoring his work lyrically, and some what idealogically, and whether or not that censorship has bled into the music as a side effect.

I wonder sometimes if people have to have Prince be dirty for them to dig the music. I dig both styles and music from across his entire career. Sometimes it'd be cool to hear a dirty track again but it's not really a deal breaker. I still think he writes dirty but it's not so overt as it was in his youth(Elixer comes to mind). Good music is still good music regardless of the topic being sung about.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I really appreciate albums like the rainbow children, planet earth, musicology, lotusflower and mpls sound, even parts of 20ten, so yes, I think he can write good music since he has been less dirty, as you say.

I appreciate those also. And let me say, I am not calling them not good. I am stating that the music seems to be a bit stifled the farther he goes down the clean road.

That's well said, that maybe a perception of the music from the listener is less liked simply because he isn't using dirty words. Is that sort of what you are driving at? It's an interesting concept if it us.
