I agree that Prince and Jerome have some funny moments. But that doesn't change the fact that the script is weak and simplistic. And what bothers me most about it is that is was written by a professional writer. If Prince had written it, he could have been excused for coming up with this nonsense because he is a songwriter and not a screenwriter. The problem is that Prince was taking this message of true love being stronger than anything way too seriously. That's why I said he was making a fool of himself.

Pentacle

People who like this movie should be buried alive with the original negative in a time capsule.

(It's the only way that people are going to remember this movie in a couple of decades time.)

In the DMSR book,it was reported that Prince didn't like the way the movie turned out. When it was finally finished,he went home and cried to Susannah Melvoin (his live-in fiance at the time),saying that the film "didn't turn out the way I planned".

But this is what happens when you fire the director and assume that you can do everything yourself lol I personally like the movie but there are many flaws throughout.

I agree, the script is weak and really silly. Two black guys from Miami travel all the way to France to con a wealthy young lady out of her millions lol The message (love is more important than money) is too simple and obvious.

It's too bad Albert Magonoli didn't have a hand in it. (from what I know: Purple Rain, SOTT the movie (uncredited),Batdance,Partyman)

I had no idea Magnoli was involved in Sign o' the Times. This would be the Paisley Park reshoots, I presume? I'd be very keen to hear more detail, if you have some! smile

The answer is plain as day on all the slates of the raw footage (mislabeled as outtakes by bootleggers) of every camera angle that's on bootleg dvd out there. It says Magnoli on the slate as I remember. I could be wrong... someone check!

Albert Magnoli was also supposed to direct Graffiti Bridge but Prince fired him because of "creative differences" nuts Albert might have been able to salvage that lousy film, lol.

There are lots of reasons not to like it if you're watching as someone who'd just gotten on the bandwagon, say about 2+ years prior with Purple Rain. Having only listened to that and 1999 with no outtakes/unreleased recordings, not being well-versed in The Time...maybe never having been to a show... You enter this world of crass, black vernacular-laden humor, where your would-be rock god is trying to let his inner Eddie Murphy out of the closet (lol) and you're like...WTH???

Now add the huge buildup with MTV and the unmet expectations of all this great music (like someone already mentioned) to a pretty weak script and novice directing. Hmm.. that would do it. And that's just for people who were just getting into Prince, lol.

Personally, back then I was like "HAHAHA...Yeah, this is more what Prince is really like!" and me and my friends quoted from it all the time. biggrin

It's ok...Its not NEAR as bad as critics said, but it also has some cringe-worthy moments. The whole scene with Prince in the bathtub and Jerome sprinkling flowers in the water?? I mean talk about homoerotic...and these guys are supposedly playboys? Then when he gets shot at the end...its more funny than sad. But I still enjoy it and of course the music is the real reason its even on my radar.

Now Graffiti Bridge...even the music couldn't save that steaming pile of doody

Lestat and Louis by Cruise and Pitt was homo-erotic. That Prince in the tub with Tricky sitting there throwing petals was ri-gatdam-iculous! I dont know what else to call it lol.
