Who Else Misses "The Artist"

There was someting so freaking cool about Prince becoming "The Artist."

It was like, "they can joke about it, but I know he's simply the coolest motherfucker on the planet."

Know what I mean?

That's why I love this man's attitude. He did the same thing when they called him "Purple Yoda" and he wrote it into "Laydown"

Man, I hated those days.

You could just feel the 'outcast' vibe.

I sometimes felt like a complete idiot for still having faith in his ability, and soundness of mind. I even got a letter to Vibe published sticking up for him in 1994. I pointed out that no rap artist goes by their birth name, except for maybe Keith Murray, and nobody makes a fuss over that. He endured a lot of ridicule in those days, but so did those who stuck by him. I loved his musical abandon at that time, I guess freeing himself from having to please anyone also freed up his music. He's swung to the opposite pole nowadays, not courting controversy so much. His JDub phase hasn't been as adventurous musically imo, but it's still being written so to each his own

its funny to think how much people are always trying to bring prince down. i feel like hes held at a higher standard than most other artists

I'm still kind of angry about that phase. By isolating himself like that, people were too busy laughing at him to listen to any of the music, and some of it was quite good. I think Gold, for instance, could have been a big hit.

Really wonderfull music.

i dont miss those days at all. Media and just conversation about Prince always focused on his unpronounceable name instead of his music or any thing else he was doing at the time. Dreadful period of his career in my opinion.

prince to me became "the artist" around 97

he had no name in 95-gold etc was cool as fuck and THAT premier gig at minneapolis in 94 when he previewed the new music was truly truly jawdropping

the vibe cover...the music overtook the bewilderment and mocking from the media

then emancipation...........ookayish some of his best music and some of his blandest

and THEN for me became the artist......

and it WASNT THE MEDIA it was prince called himslf the ARTIST tho he denies it in interviews

all that"who rock the hardest..the artist rock the hardest"

all those doug e fresh chants...........

dude thats not up for debate

critically ?

Prince is only on a par with the beatles and bowie for being held in the highest esteem

thats untouched

but come on...the whole symbol thing SO SO SO nearly worked

IF gold had been marketed properly...but it wasnt and to everyones surprise Ps output went rapidly downhill

but GOLD is still a stone cold classic.its a fucking travesty that never was a global number one

I don't see how you get that I'm trying to tear Prince down from what I wrote. I was saying that I stuck by him, didn't say it was easy to still be a fan. I think it's funny your knee jerk reaction to what I wrote, instead of actually reading what I said.

I agree.Prince did alot of damage to his career in the 90s.As a result, people paid very little attention to the music.Under different circumstances,'TGE' could have been a multi-platinum hit album.

now i'm even more confused. do you mean a joke, like i actually believe the opposite of what i wrote? or a joke like what i wrote is so obviously true why would i even write it? i have no idea which one you're saying.

I remember that time - everyone & their brother asking me 'why's he changed his name? 'why has he got slave written on his face'... The ridicule in the media.. It wasnt enjoyable.. He didnt look well (underweight etc) or happy 2 me either. I was glad when he took his name back, altho it wasnt news by that point. I think things felt quite dark somewhere around symbol/come lp's (altho I loved both, esp come) & I felt it was that the gold lp was the start of his departure in the generall publics/media's conscousness. I only really play shhh, shy, bjb,i hate u from that lp. boxed

yeah that was quite tragic when he changed his name back and by then the media just didnt give a shit

he changed it back purely fr commercial reasons cos symbol was doing jack shit

of course a few fams bought the dawn bullshit

just a very very very bad choice
