GRAFFITI BRIDGE - does this movie suck or blow?

Well, we were having ourselves a chuckle over on the "Under The Cherry Moon" topic ( see: http://www.prince.org/msg...&tid=36435 ) about favorite lines from the flick, when the discussion (my bad) took a turn as I replied to an early-on question about what anyone thought of Graffiti Bridge. I posted my brief review:

---

"PS: With the exception of about 2 or 3 scenes featuring Morris Day, "Graffiti Bridge" is almost totally unwatchable. What an abortion of a movie. It makes me want to gouge my eyeballs out to watch Prince reduce himself to this halfass attempt at "Purple Rain 2", it was about as good as "Caffiene Free Diet New Coke". If anything should have gone straight out of the camera and into the vault never to be heard from again this movie was it. Sadly, it was released and widely promoted, while things like "roadhouse garden" went straight into lockdown. Oh well, anyway, if you get to rent 2 for 1 then pick it up but best be sedated when you pop this one in. If you actually have to pay to rent it, just pass"

---

Then I was challenged on that view by 'gypsyfire':

---

"NO,IT SHOULD NOT HAVE GONE STRAIGHT INTO THE VAULT!!!
I love watching it-the way P looks,Ingrid Chavez,Jill in long,dark hair,the Question of U sequence,Love Machine performance,and on and on..."

---

To which I replied:

---

"Dont get me wrong, I LOVED (most of) the soundtrack!! And yes there were a couple of scenes worth watching, and Ingrid love but seriously, the movie itself?? Someone needs to be bitch slapped for this thing ever getting out of that fake-ass sound stage where it was shot. Morris daring his crew to eat the peppers = lol George Clinton = nod most of the music = yes but come on, "The Kid" riding his bike across a fakeass sound stage? = hmm the serious attempt to carry this forward as an extension of the plot from Purple Rain?? = shake and really, the RAPS?? = boo This movie sucks ass just my 2 cents but there it is barf

---

So I thought, despite the fact this debate has probably been discussed to death already, that I would like to hear some opinions from the forum on GB the movie. What say ye, O Wise & Wonderful Forum?

I'd say it sucks, harder than a hoover.

Now an example of a movie that blows:

Purple Rain is made more like a movie, and in my opinion is much better. Better script.
I don't know if what I'll say makes sense in the world of cinema, but Graffiti Bridge, to me, is just like a real long music video. Something for MTV, VH1, and BET.
I do enjoy The Time's, Tevin's, Mavis', and George Clinton's performances.

I felt sad when I saw this film. The plot is rubbish and the acting is poor. There's too many cameos from people like Tevin and Mavis. I never watch it because i cant find a reason to. The set looks cheap and tacky. Morris and Jerome are the only people who come out of it somewhat ok.

Hey y'all forgetting this will be looked upon as a WIZARD OF OZ down the road...lol

Seriously, you're all too critical...maybe if we saw the 3 hour version it would seem
more developed.

"3 hours" !? NOOO! Please save us from more of the awful acting (especially Prince's band - the Time do OK with the comedy though)

My 2 cents (pence?) as regards what we got though: musically some welcome and adventurous stuff: Tick Tick Bang is especially 'out there' and all the better for it but there's a few obvious fillers and even New Power Generation sounds a bit tired. As far as the story goes, I get and appreciate the message but the execution is all over the shop,

Maybe Prince should have got a real director in and played him/her Still Will Stand All Time at the outset: the only point the film is really as cohesive as Purple Rain. IMHO.

I loved the Elephants & Flowers look and performance.
