Emancipation as One Disc In another thread (http://prince.org/msg/7/372647) Joe Tyler suggested emancipation should have been one disc to avoid the filler. I happen to agree. If you do too (or even if you don't) I'd love to see your track listing for it.

I came up with a 12-track album and I'm gonna title it "New World".
Prince---New World
Get Yo Groove On New World Damned If I Do Emale Courtin' Time In This Bed I Scream Sex In The Summer One Kiss At A Time Soul Sanctuary Sleep Around My Computer The Holy River
To me,that's a tight, consistent album with no filler Notice there are no remakes on my tracklist.I wasn't crazy about any of the 4 remakes that made the album.
Singles: "Sleep Around","Sex In The Summer" and "The Holy River"

In 10,000 other threads 10,000 other people suggest that and I say...
NO!
CUT THE CRAP!
U don't suggest that War & Peace shoulda been reduced 2 100 pages, so please...
CUT
THE
CRAP
(Once & 4 all!)
Thank u.

I take the opposite view. I think the album needed to be even longer. Throw in a fourth disc and make each disc exactly seventy-five minutes long. Four discs, fifteen tracks each for a total of sixty new songs. Five hours of brand new Prince music, what could be better? [Edited 12/19/11 6:53am]

I like it the way it is...I tried to edit when it came out and I was always missing certain tracks that I liked. For instance both One Disc playlists above don't include Face Down, which immediatley makes them inferior to the released 3-disc set.

It's true this thread does come up every 2 weeks, but it's always fun to play 'what if' etc
I've been listening to Emancipation since the P&B review, and re-discovering the parts about it that I liked, as well as those I don't

U left a lot of the filler on there LOL...New World, Emale, Sleep Around... [Edited 12/19/11 8:33am]

Prince is gonna think "wtf are these guys asking for more music and the vault, and when i give them lots of music, such as a 3cd set, they wan't less"
I wouldn't blame him.
Emancipation was a 3CD set...listen to it and enjoy AS HE INTENDED IT.....it's a great album

I swear the org could be reduced to just ten threads and everything would be covered. RIP

^ Yes this particular thread has been done about 1000x before....

One man's trash, etc..... Personally, I think they are 3 of the strongest tracks on the set, NW is my favourite on the whole thing.

hehehe blah blah blah | |

I have never been happy with Emancipation, it's just long and sprawling and full of damn ballads...
So I decided to remove what I didn't like, replace some with outtakes from the era (like journey 2 the center of your heart, etc) take off the covers and change it into 3 themed albums following the artworks theme of 'love, sex and liberty'.
What I ended up with is a nice jazzy r&b album, an album of ballads and a more experimental album.
Since doing that, I've listened to it more than ever before... And belive it or not the 'damn ballads' one is now my favourite of the three blah blah blah

I hate these threads, I'd rather have all the music most of these one disc versions omit some of the best tracks...

It's all subjective at the end of the day, one mans gold is another man's Jughead blah blah blah

I remember Uptown mag did a top 12 track list right when it came out, and it was a good list...but not one of the 12 reviewers voted for Courtin Time, while Peach and Black recently considered it to be one of the absolute best, saying it was basically perfect. On the other hand, P&B didn't like Get Yo Groove On, while Uptown loved it....So, I think it's best to just enjoy the album as is. Is it his best of the 90's? Not for me - more like number 4, behind Gold, D&P, and Symbol.
Do I personally think it could be paired down to TWO discs? Maybe. But then it wouldn't be so wonderfully all over the place. It's massive amount of songs, good and bad, is a huge part of the fun of Emancipation.
No need to change it. It's great the way it is.

We did this about 1,000 times already and all it led to was that we couldn't agree on one album at all. Everybody would keep different tracks and that's why Emancipation is perfect as it is, it's got something for everybody.

No shit, right? I think Slave and New World are the best things on there. I doubt Prince is the first person to write a song after reading New World by Aldus Huxley, but he's probably the first with any kind of chart recognition. Slave is just nuts on the vocal performance AND it's not a Prince-by-numbers jam.

"Slave" is a really cool track. Basically all percussion. Has he ever done another song like that?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Wow, this really is subjective...those are probably the most boring for me...if I had to jettison 3 tracks, those would probably be it....Slave (rather self indulgent/ irritating effects) , New World (too MJ ish for me, rather repetitive) and Emale (again repetitive chorus)...lets say..
If I had to pick my top 3 it would be: The Love We Make (best of the whole set - AMAZING), White Mansion and One Kiss At A Time.....
Thankfully though we don't have to make do with 3...we have 36 tracks and I have NO complaints at all about him releasing 3 CD sets...bring em on!

I always thought New World was with reference to the new world translation of the bible. The version the JW's read... RIP
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
^ This was before his conversion, no it's about creating a New World, presumably based on Love...like the idealism of it even if i'm not mad keen on the song itself..
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
'New World' was recorded in 1994, so it's a little before the whole JW thang.
Now 'Slave', see we have differing opinions in the thread already, I don't like it - I find it whiney and self-indulgent, I prefer the Exodus version. On the P&B podcast they made an interesting point that I hadn't thought of before that it doesn't really belong on the set, since the album is all about 'freedom' and it's after the whole 'slave' thing, so it would've suited something like Exodus more. I tend to agree and always skip it.

Disc 1
Disc 2
Disc 3

Is it true Prince was onstage with MJ and JB? "Climb in my fur."

We know the threads been done a million times but considering the vast amounts of awful filler in Emancipation its always fun to try and find small amounts of buried treasure and make it into a single good CD. Plus it helps for new memebers who would rather shelf the CD than dig for a gem or two.

Vince Gill beat him to it.
You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
