Sign o times vs lovesexy which is the better concert? I've seen both sign o times concert and lovesexy concert. Can't decide which was the better representation of Prince at his best. Any opinions?

lovesexy was all over the place, while sign of the times was very focused. Both were some of his best, but I can't decide. I probably prefer the sign of the times a bit more though. My Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/tundrah

Lovesexy tour was amazing and I dug the concept but Sign o the Times tour seemed more intense and just plain funky. I'd have to go with SOTT. Chili Sauce.

Outside of the PR Tour the SOTT tour was the one I reall wanted to see live but he showed no love to the US for that tour. I saw Lovesexy tour and even though it was bad-ass SOTT was mo betta IMO At least we had the concert movie!! The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.
Remember there is only one destination and that place is U All of it. Everything. Is U.

SOTT was more structured and stayed on point, but I do like LS as well, but SOTT wins. Prince's Sarah

I saw and loved both, but Lovesexy was the pinnacle in my eyes. The sheer boldness of it. A round stage, hydrolics, a thunderbird, Cat, a story to tell, and most of all, a changing set list that covered his entire career like no other.
Going to the SOTT shows was a concert. Going to the Lovesexy shows was an event!
SOTT is my favourite album, but the Livesexy show has Erotic City, housquake, Sister, Bob George, Controversy, Annastasia, I know, Lovesexy, The cross (still the best version), I wish U Heaven, If I had a harem, Alphabet Street and piano medleys! Lovesexy! .

SOTT for me as a concert
I love the stage set, it felt like you were somewhere Uptown You are able to see the full band and certain songs worked better with the SOTT line up better than the Lovesexy show like Housequake
I love the 'event' of Lovesexy, it was grand and it did give you a wider range of songs from his career (Squirrelgrease) said the same. And that I did like. Lovesexy also featured songs from the Black album
But over all I prefer the SOTT concert

It is extremely close, but SOTT wins for me. But my favorite concert is the SOTT Warm-up show at First Avenue on 3-21-87. Even though that was the "warm-up," that show exceeded the scripted concert in my opinion.

LoveSexy because like the Master Musician it was broad in scope and imagination.

I've seen both gigs as well and I can't really decide which one is better either. Lovesexy wins it by maybe a fraction. Reason is that I've seen Lovesexy 3 times, one of them in Dortmund which was really awesome. SOTT just 1 time.
The thing both tours have in common is the last part before the encore, "Let's Go Crazy/When Doves Cry/1999": it's exactly the same during both tours.
The way "The Cross" was played during the Lovesexy-tour however, is better than during the SOTT-tour in my opinion, because it's played much stronger. I've always appreciated that song more in the live version than the studio version. 'Liberate My Mind'

of these two I would pick SOTT. Not a fan of the LS tour. Neither are really my favorites but SOTT has more highlights than LS. LS is hard to stomach for me. The stage show was good though

Watching the Lovesexy dvd was what got me into Prince in the first place! My hubby went to see it live when he was 13 and still says (after marriage and kids) it was his best day in his life. He still gets so excited when it comes on and he knows it word for word. I bought SOTT. Really liked it, especially the dancing but it was abit too staged for me. Lovesexy rocks!!!!

I can't really answer this because Prince never brought SOTT the States... LoveSexy was epic, but I don't really like his theater in the round shows & Lovesexy also seems to be the start of Prince playing only small snippets of songs instead of the full tune....
From what I've seen of footage of SOTT, it seems like it was better musically, but LoveSexy was a more elaborate production...
If I could go back in time to witness one of them, I'd choose SOTT.

Not even close for me. SOTT by 4,000,000 or so. Still, Lovesexy was great. Along with Parade, the only 2 tours where the song snippets and medleys are still great moments. As much as I hate medleys, he still did enough full length songs to get a pass. SOTT was his best tour hands down. If he had played full length versions of U Got The Look, Strange Relationship, and played Forever In My Life without It, and more like the album...it would've been too good to be true. Purple Rain was shortened, and kinda weak, Let's Go Crazy was a total joke with the "Go Go GO" chant ruining the song...but despite these criticisms, the rest of the show was better than I thought a band could be. SOTT, Sunshine, Housequake, IF I was your girlfriend, The Cross, girls & boys, I Could Never, and SLow Love were all epic times 4 million. The movie was near perfect. Even Beautiful Night was better than I imagined, though replacing it with Crystal Ball or Condition of the Heart would've been better for me.
The SOTT album and tour remain my favorite moments to revisit. The band was his best by far. Had he had the horn section take a break during Doves, and played Let's Go Crazy like the album...I would've probably just died on the spot. I always make pretend setlists for this tour...
and here's one now...
SOTT Sunshine LRC Housequake Strange Relationship/6 The Ballad of Dorothy Parker/4 Condition of the Heart Kiss girls & boys Erotic City Starfish & Coffee Crystal Ball Rock Hard In A Funky Place Computer Blue Darling Nikki When Doves Cry I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man If I Was Your Girlfriend U Got The Look Data Bank Forever In My Life Adore Old Friends 4 Sale Purple Rain The Cross
The Band:
Horns: Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss Guitar: Miko Weaver, Wendy, and Prince on nearly every track...less dancing, more music. Bass: Sonny T(well before his time, but he was known in Uptown) Drums: Sheila E Keys: Matt Fink, Lisa
Yeah, I am totally revising history into my "Wet Dream" version of the tour, but that's what these websites are for...revisionist history. We all know what really happened...instead of totally breaking up the Revolution, you keep the best parts, and add some better musicians.

SOTT by miles Lovesexy was too staged and contained far too many medleys Despite that i still love it
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Thats my major beef and what I cant understand. Most people have complained about the medleys for the past decade or more and Lovesexy was full of them. Yet that tour gets heralded to the high heavens. "Climb in my fur."

LOVESEXY! Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
Purple music does the same 2 my brain And I'm high, so high

Lovesexy shouldn't even be in any contest, it's his best tour, period.
The medleys WORKED on that tour, I would take a medley of Jack U Off, Sister and Do Me Baby anyday.
It was everything Prince was as a performer all wrapped up in one show, the true battle between Camille and Spooky Electric. Brilliant. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
