Ok, i finally LISTENED to The Vault

Man, this is some mature ass, fun & bluesy, well played ish! Dude could re-release this NOW under a different title (i think the title predisposed ppl to listening to it as throwaway tracks). but it is coherent as hell and might be his best sequenced selection of songs. what was that 1998 or something?! Damn, dude is always ahead of the game. These songs fit him better as a 50 year old IMO. No "killer single" to drive interest in the album though which is probably why i hadn't revisited it in all these years. But man, I'll gladly accept my late pass, I SLEPT on this. Quality stuff!

5 Women alone makes the album for me. You got When The Lights Go Done, She Spoke To Me Extended, Sarah, Old Friends 4 Sale, this album jams. My dad keeps this playing on the computer when he's doing work, especially 5 Women.

In my mind there was an emoticon that vomits, but I checked and didn't find one, so I guess not. But if there was one, I think this is an album I would use it on. I do understand where the praise comments in the thread so far are coming from. I hear what you are hearing, but.... in the end the production just doesn't work. 5 Women, sounds good musically, in a Chicago blues sort of way, but it sounds like he is mimicking a blues record rather than making one. He massacred Old Friends For Sale, rather than let WB have the rights to a clean master. Sarah, was kinda good, but then again it does sound half finished, and sort of vocally like a guy going through the motions of writing a song. I don't remember the rest of the tracks, but the ones I mentioned were probably the best ones. Wasn't there some God-awful stage music or something on the record? How is this NOT the worst album of Prince's career?

You couldn't find the emoticon that vomits even if you checked?

That's a pretty good indication how seriously your comments should be taken.

This is a fun, summer album. Of course it's not 1999, but it shouldn't have to be. It's a party, perfect for cruisin' on a sunny day. And anyone who says Extroardinary ain't sublime is just plain trying to hate the record.

Yeah, you added a lot to the thread. But I hate to post off-topic so I'll add this.

This is one of Prince's let-me-out-of-my-millions-dollars-contract albums. biggrin By no means is it a professional effort. It's literally nothing more than mastered demos...Wait, wait... are we talking about DIRTY MIND? Um no, we are talking about the OTHER album of mastered demos.... SOTT? No, no this is the record that's NOT sexy. biggrin This is the album of random demos that Prince submitted for various other projects culled together onto one record as a gigantic FU to WB, so that Prince can be FREEEE! biggrin Yet, tellingly, to some listeners, the experience is PREFERRABLE to his REAL records. OUCH! biggrin

I don't know what it sounds like when someone has a stick up their butt, but I bet if you roll a mic and piano in front of them, dollars-to-donuts they play Extaordinary. Or possibly Damn U. biggrin Sorry, but I just couldn't resist.

This second "throwaway album" was in my opinion not more listenable than Chaos and Disorder however more...boring than it. Both albums were completely different in styles and vibes.

I got the feeling prince was not in control of the release of this album and Warners just swept the floor and said "can we make an album out of this?".

I have the Vault book and I cannot recall the story behind this album. Anyone?

I'm with you, I found it extremely boring. He didn't have anything to do with it's release, in fact he released Rave at the same time.

I heard differently. Even down to the album artwork, he was involved.

Like C&D, a lot of people came late to this party because of the whole contractual obligation thing.

I was into C&D from the start, but I didn't really appreciate the Vault until years after it's release because I was just 'blah' on Prince at this point (Rave, Emancipation, nutty websites, CB etc) - but I think there's a lot of strong material on the CD, and it's probably even more cohesive as a set than C&D.
