Prince & the Paisley Protégé 1985 -1986 A B C D
Sheila E a Romance 1600 the Family Mazarati Jill Jones
I listen & look back on this time and wonder how great it would have been with the combination of these 3 acts & Prince & the Revolution
touches of the proteges in the film Under the Cherry Moon the planned Protege tour unreleased music the Revolutions reach
the music had a different aspect of what was happening in Paisley Park, the showmanship was being polished and Prince ... and so many untold stories as well as information & pictures shared and surfacing...

Romance 1600 members
Juan Escovedo on percussion, Eddie Minnifeld on saxaphone, Karl Perazzo on drums, Ken Grey and Susie Davis on keyboards, Benjamin Rietveld on bass and Miko Weaver and Stephen Birnbaum on guitars.
In 1985, a 25-year-old Sheila Escovedo, aka Sheila E., followed up her debut solo album, The Glamorous Life, with the equally Prince-influenced Romance 1600. The album cover found Escovedo and her band members sporting the attire of 17th century Europe, and the musicians were given such names as Dame Kelly, Benentino the Wizard, the Earl of Grey, and Sir Stephan.

^I'm afraid she wasn't exactly trying to make a good point...
On the contrary, it was a very good exercise in sarcasm.

Oh, I know. I caught it. I was just trying to look over that dumb shit, say it's actually a good idea, and then have it done just to irritate her.

A life without love, a life without love
The sound on this cut is a stand out developement in Prince's sound, each instrument just has something special. Eddie M's sax adds an emotion I can't name just yet

Nice info. You know what's funny? I've never heard of Mazarati and some other proteges/Prince groups, until about 5 years ago. I keep asking myself how did I miss these groups? I bet during the times they were out I heard a song or two, but probably didn't realize it was them. Just looking at the clothes, the big hair, etc, they all seemed to have had that Prince 80s look, that takes you right into the 80s. Thanks for the info.

Thanks 4 sharing those, there are always so many more pix and more information from these times that has yet to be shared... the Mazarati project was always an interesting one I wish we had a more time to see develope
during the Parade era it seemed they were allowed the expression of a looser raw group vs say the Family which would have been more 'classy'

lol I was up on everything back then, but had to take my time by this period because there were so many wanna be's like Ready 4 the World who had that sound
If Prince would have introduced Sheila E the Family & Mazarati via Under the Cherry Moon the all would have be taken to another level and our interests would have quickly been exposed to them

I was just thinking about Ready for the World. Are they the ones that sang "Oh Sheila"? I swore they were affiliated with Prince or that the song was from Prince, when I first heard that song. I actually loved that song, and it played on the radio non-stop. They had the sound of the Time as well, but I have to say, that group definitely had the "Prince" sound. Not only that, the lead singer had his hair styled like the 80s Prince, but I have to say that Prince basically 'owned' that hairdo, the fashion, etc., that others tried to copy from him. I need to hear what Mazarati's sound is like, because now I'm in wonder if I ever heard any of their songs at all. Seems like so many artists back then was trying to adopt the 'Prince' look, but Prince put a stamp on that, and owns it. Like he said in his song "There will never be another like me".

I wash Alexander Nevermind had things/people in place to help promo all the groups and give him some slow down cues because this era could have been even bigger 2 fandom if the Family was in place. Sheila E was definately doing her thing

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

^^^ That photo has always had a touch of mystery behind it. They really had character, made you want to know them, and what was going on in that house.
