This is awesome thread idea. Hell SOTT has Adore and Girlfriend vocal. But songs like It doesnt exactly sound like a great voice. I think you may be right. P Rain has WDC...beautiful delivery and The Beautiful Ones! And like you said, he hits all the right notes perfectly on every song!

Tambourine doesnt show as much proficiency and perfect tone as the vocals on Rain th9ugh. I thught that was what the op was speaking about. I do however understand the uninhibited singing is cool and maybe better preferred on other releases such as ATWIAD. Cause that unionhibited thing he does on that spot on Temptation ..whoah! He must have lost his voice for days doing thagt part. Awesome.

Interesting... English isn't my mother tongue. I can tell the difference between the English accent and the American when someone speaks, but I haven't noticed it on this album. Any song in particular in which this fake accent is very clear? Maybe that was due to the influence of the British New Wave, I suppose...

Like others have said, Purple Rain.

While I don't think the singing is the best, I love the vocals on Parade.

The falsetto is great and on songs like New Position and Under The Cherry Moon etc, his vocals are.. I can't think of the word.. raw? Nah, I don't think that's it, but if you listen to the songs I think you'll understand what I'm talking about. But it's a style that goes through a lot of the songs on the album. It's different.

On Under The Cherry Moon he sounds vunerable as well. On Sometimes It Snows you can hear the emotion in his voice, the song used to really get to me.

Just as he changed his wardrobe, band, sound for every album, he also changed his usual singing voice.

On Parade he used the overdrive technique a lot (as in Anotherloverholenyohead or SISIA), for instance, while he only used the neutral for his first two albums (and mostly falsetto, of course).

Personally, I loved how and what he sang on The Gold Experience, which was very theatric and extreme. When he screamed, he screamed, when he sang in the falsetto, it was the clearest falsetto ever, when he sang deep notes, he opened his throat to make it sound even deeper etc.

The faux-Brit affect shows up in the Automatic "speech", All The Critics in parts, and lays it on thick (in a Minnesota guy doing an English accent kind of way) as the "pilot" in International Lover. It's by no means a distraction for me as he was experimenting with so many voices and deliveries on that LP and it stands as one of his best albums, but it's a little giggle-inducing when he does it. Not uber irritating like when Madonna suddenly had a British accent.

Controversy and Purple Rain are amazing with singing. Expecially Do Me, Baby. From the falsetto to the rock like screams....I might become gay because of that song!

I'd say 1999 but maybe because he uses quite a lot of echo and layering of vocals back then, which make his vocals sound richer (1982-1985). By Parade, he stripped the effects down.

despite being indifferent about rainbow children musically and melodically, i think his vocals are fantastic.

I'd throw The Gold Experience into the mix.

The screams on Endorphinmachine, falsetto on TMBGITW, percussive stuff on Shy, and even his voice on I hate U (which I don't like as a track) sounds pretty awesome.

his best nod to an english accent has to be the "london what does big ben say?...toime to do the groind" line in le grind. cracks me up every toime that does.
