thieves in the temple

aloha!

can anybody tell me if there is a clearer version of that demo version of thieves in the temple that appears on 'the work'. the acoustic, super falsetto one. i love it and i don't even mind the quality of it. i actually kinda like it. but out of interest, yeah, does something else exist?

i'd also like to take this opportunity to say, i hate that weird cutty bit in the video mix. i think he's dancing on a roof at that point.

yours sincerely,
me. x

Is that the "ki-ki-ki-ki-kicking me in my heart" bit?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the best source for out-takes/unreleased tracks is still a combo of Work It/30 Years OF Unreleased Funk/Chocolate Box - and I don't think Thieves has any significant alt. quality versions circulating from the Work - so I think you have the best quality version available still(?)

Yes! the "ki-ki-ki-ki-kicking me in my heart" bit.

and also, i would agree with the combination of work it etc for the best source of outtakes and all that jazz. i just wondered if i'd missed out on a 'thieves' somewhere.

thank you! smile

I always loved that song, until someone pointed out the unlikely similarity to Say Say Say, by Paul McCarteny & Michael Jackson (which I still love).

And it's true, if you place Thieves on top of Say, Say, Say... sing the melody lines in your head, it's a clear rip-off...

Unfortunately no.

As for The Work, you would be better to ditch that and get Work It 2.0, it's updated, and in chronological order.

Thieves In The Temple... I just love this track. music

the single version, (3:20)

the ext long version, (about 8 mins),

and also the "rare" 7 inch instr. b-side: Thieves - Part II (only about 1:42). I think I have this in wav from a japanese cd single.

Also: I have so good memories to this 7 inch vinyl single:

I was on summer holliday when it was released in 1990, but the girl in the copenhagen record shop agreed to record the single version and also this b-side to a cassette tape; IF I paid for the 7 inch and that cassette tape...... of course I accepted that,

this was long before the internet, I was so excited to hear the new leading single from Prince. News about Prince singles and albums were very hard to get back then.

I remember hearing this song and the b-side on tape over and over, fast rewinding the tape again and again... those were great days being a Prince fan, usually I was thrilled with every release back then. cool

Oh FFS - the melody is similar for 2 bars in each verse! You could say that about thousands of songs. Even if he was inspired by "Say Say Say" (which I doubt) there is NOTHING wrong with that and musicians do it ALL THE TIME!

Get yourself some musical education or just STFU!

I've had lots of musical education, Mindfuck, thank you. Listen again. Even the pauses are in the same place(s).

You mean the "pauses" in the very first bar? As in "Say..say..say" and "Love come quick"? Yes, they're the same - that phrasing in 4/4 time is common as muck! Other than that, there are no melodic or rhythmic similarities at all - even the very next line "what you want"/"love come in a hurry" is different (bar 2 being occupied by music in SSS and TITP's bar 2 is a semibreve rest....but with you're musical education you, of course, know this). They're not in the same key either and have different chord progressions.

But, you know what, let's just transcribe the first 4 bars of the verse, that won't take long at all - I'll do SSS and you can do TITP and then we can compare them - deal? However, it will only show uou that there is just ONE BAR that is identical and that's like calling someone out for using a phrase like "I love you" in a song or novel!
