I agree with Riverman that most of the songwriting on this album is less than great. I started my own discussion on Colonized Mind some time ago and read some very good comments. There may be more to this song than you think, Riverman! Give it another listen. But on the whole, I like the album mostly because as a guitar player, Prince is in top shape on this one.

Wanna talk about it Colonized Mind Upload, the evolution principle You see a rock on the shore and say “It’s always been there” Download, no responsibility Do what you want, nobody cares those 2 cause and effect examples are chalk and cheese - Evolution is fact...besides rocks don't evolve...as usual hes getting ideas mixed up and spoutung them (much like Act of God does) he's referring to a combination of The Giant Impact hypothesis by Darwin and Acretion which is a proven fact. They of course have no bearing on the 2nd statement. Upload, the master race idea Genetically disposed to rule the world Download, future full of isolated Full of isolated, boys and girls seems Nazis got off lightly with this Upload, the 2 party system The lesser of 2 dangers, Illusion of choice Download, their form of fascism Nothing really ever changes You never had a voice not sure I get this...is it a "same sing with a different name" political comment again? Listen to me one time : If you look, you’re sure gonna find Throughout mankind’s history A Colonized Mind The one in power makes law Under which the colonized fall Without God, it’s just the blind leading the blind yep, that's how it works and why you should vote instead of pissing and moaning about how you aren't heard Upload, a joint venture record deal It’s just another way another man can still sleep While he’s sticking you with the bill Download, a temporary acquisition of fleeting fame and fortune Nothing to leave in your will Hey hey hey hey you signed the deal more than once...you've done well out if it - I've never been able to demand a camel midnight...you've got nothing to leave in a will then be more sensible with your money Upload, a child with no father Download, no respect for authority Upload, a child with no mother Download, a hard time showing love the only decent comment in the whole song IF it's referring to slap dash parenting...if it means a kid can't grow up without both then it's a cowardly attack on a lot of hardworking single parents If you look, you’re sure gonna find Throughout mankind’s history A Colonized Mind The one in power makes law Under which the colonized fall Without God : it’s just the blind leading the blind not if your open minded to facts and education my friend instead of blinkered to only religion and dismissing everything that doesn't fit your template [b]

Never really knew about him. I'm 26 and my hubby (a lifelong prince fan) is 10 years older than me and I sort of knew his biggest and commercial hits, but nothing else. So 6 months ago I bought the Per Neilson book and I was hooked. So I dug out all my hubby's old albums and I'm trying to make my way through them all. Also trying to get my head around all the craziness!!! Listened and loved most of the 80's music and now as everyone seems to have such strong opinions on the more recent albums, I though I should form my own opinions. Will keep you informed

Nobody gives a crap what you thinks is a fact, to be quite honest.
I could say my belief is a fact except I don't force my ideas on other innocent minds.
I thought this topic was about Lotusflow3r and how it's amazing.
Way to 360 a good thread. Do you do this to other message boards?
Fuck Dinosaurs.
Thank You, Neon.

[Edited 10/15/11 9:24am] ok - I don't want to get off topic and this was about Colonised Mind originally...but it IS fact, it's why schools are banned from teaching creationism as fact (certainly here in the UK). I'm not saying religious beliefs aren't valid or can't go hand in hand with science...but you can't dismiss scientific fact just because they don't fit within the boundaries if religious beliefs. Anyway don't want this to get too far away rom lotusflower or colonised mind's dismissing of facts.. which is where this originally start from (so it's not "360°"....which would actually be a continuation in a straight line if you want to be clever...another fact )...just felt I needed to respond as you seemed to be suggesting science wasn't fact religion was. As you were

You should keep this in mind before spouting off about supposed 'facts' Purpledoveuk.
I am agonostic and verging on being atheist, but i would never dismiss anything fully, even Prince's strange beliefs.

I am agonostic and verging on being atheist, but i would never dismiss anything fully, even Prince's strange beliefs. I haven't dismissed religion...just saying Prince was wrong to dismiss evolution. Enough people sign up to religious belief that you can't deny that people follow it, just like you can't sweep certain discoverys under the carpet because they don't fit in with religious beliefs

Whenever Lotusflow3r or in particular Colonized Mind is bigged up on here I pride myself for steadfastly linking to Miriam Makeba's song Quit It. Prince just added dumb, bigoted lyrics about evolution and single parent families to her melody and instrumentation and even lifted the "... no responsibility" line:

when I listen to Prince music, then it is usually something from 1981-1988 for me.
LF/MPLS are good/ OK, but it is so rare I bother to take a listen,

What a lovely song. I think Prince must have been heavily influenced by it, maybe you could even go as far as saying he ripped it! I actually think her version is better.

Saying ripped off is going TOO far. It just is.

Maybe, but the similaraties are unbelievable. Prince can do no wrong in my eyes usually, but I am now struggling to give him too much credit for colonized mind. I still love the song and album though.

I think "Colonized Mind", like other Prince compositions of the last decade, suffers the hostility of many of his fans towards his religious beliefs.
I think it's an excellent tune, for sure one of his best since the early 90's. Even the lyrics aren't as dumb as some think, in my opinion, at least in part. What's sure is that many of his sex lyrics from the 80's are sillier than these, but nobody complains about them like it happens with "Colonized Mind", just because sex is great and religion is shit. Our society...
As for the whole album, I like it a lot. In my opinion, his best effort since The Rainbow Children. I'd be happy if he recorded something this good in the future.

I have grown to appreciate this album extremely, I give it a listen quite often now and it is simply fantastic. '$' and '4ever' are about the only two songs that don't make it in the top for me. Everything else for me is simply awesome. The guitar work, and message is very appealing. I love the feel and motivation it gives me, AWESOME ALBUM! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I agree that Prince's song is almost a complete note for note cover of this song. And I agree her version is great. I still dig Colonized Mind becasue I had never listened to Miriam Makeba's song before Prince's version. So I cannot take back liking Prince's song. I like both versions but I do have a better appreciation of it now though.
A tree fell in the forest someone posted it on YouTube. YouTube is a psycotic drug than can be abused for recreational purpouses, but when used properly it can achieve good results and efficacy. Some people, especially politicians whose words and deeds are captured forever and certain purple loving musicians HATE IT for that reason.

I agree 100%. Great song if you can ignore the naive bullshit lyrics. I cringe at that evolution line but I guess unlike the majority of educated people in the western world, that sort of shit flies with the majority in the u.s. For now anyway. toejam said:

Awesome song! I can definitely hear its similarities to "Colonized Mind", but it also reminds me of Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven". Of course they weren't strangers to "borrowing" an idea or two.

Blimey. Upload, A song about real issues that makes sense and written by an intelligent mind. Download, a tune that sounds really good due to it's plagiarized origins but words that make no sense and could have been written by a child. Hey, hey, hey hey!
