The album itself is pretty awesome, especially compared to much of his other work around this time.
I consider it one of his essential abums to listen to.

There's a couple of 'up there' songs on that album that definitely ring out the Prince of old....but large chunks if the album contain 2 of the elements I like least about Prince; trippy, plinky plonky 'isn't this radical' instrumentals and ill informed political guff that likens him in anyway to anybody that has, is or ever will struggle [Edited 10/13/11 6:43am]

I love it. It's like his first "grown-ups" album since the 80's. To me everything after 89 had a strangely inappropriate "Romper Room" feel to them.
Well this one and "The Truth" to me were the only ones since the 80's that did not blatantly insult our intelligence. [Edited 10/13/11 6:49am]

dude, your own posts smack of trippy, plinky 'isn't this radical'.
and how much "ill informed political stuff" is there on it really? Only CM and Dreamer could be called truly "political", yet those are two of the best songs on it.
Tripping indeed.

Exactly.
I also have to laugh at people who think Prince has never struggled. His upbringing was rough, by all accounts. And having money isn't much of a salve for the death of a child. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

depends on how much you already have, for starters Lovesexy, The Gold Experience the album is pretty great aswell.

I have nothing against the more 'conventional' instrumentals but stuff like the first track just remind me of that episode of Friends where Ross is playing his old college synthesiser and just making sounds. and yes I guess I was referring to just those 2 tracks as 'political' but stuff like Dreamer, Colonised Mind, Act of God etc just don't sit right with me...kinda like me moaning about how hard it is being a single mother, living on the streets of Russia - I'm not and I ain't. But hey, it's just my opinion...I must have misread the bit that says 'tell me how much you love Lotusflow3r and everything Prince has ever done"

You didn't misread it because nobody said that.
And if you think the subject matter of Dreamer or Colonized Mind is as foreign to Prince as your being a single mother living on the streets of Russia, well then...you have a greater gift for exaggeration than just about anyone on earth - including Prince. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Nobody said that.
"Act of God etc." isn't on LF nor comparable to "moaning like a single mother on the streets of Russia." I don't really care if you don't like the music, or the lyrics, but you are still tripping.

Mysterymum, as you can see most here agree that this is one of his best records from the recent years. But since it comes together with MPLSound, I wonder how you like that one? It's been said here before, it's difficult to give you some advice as we don't know which albums you have. But you can't go wrong with the Dirty Mind... Lovesexy years. (1980-88.) But I must say I love it that you are a late starter when it comes to P's music. It means you can judge mis music as a whole and not be stuck in one particular period. Most of us here are Prince veterans with fond memories about his glory days in the 1980s. And that's why there's so much bitching going on about his later work. I'd love to hear the rest of your journey into the Prince world...

Ha! Yeah I mean Prince is black. I assume Dreamer has some personal context to him. And anyway I guess "artists" aren't allowed to talk about "the human condition" unless they have explicitly had the experince? That goes against all common sense.
And like you said Prince has struggled. The reason I know this is because Prince is a human being. And all human beings struggle.

By his own admission, Prince worked his chapless ass off to get to riches and glory. When everyone else was sleeping, he was working. On his music. He grew up poor, came from a broken home, and once told Rolling Stone that "I didn't have any money so I'd just stand outside MacDonald's and smell stuffl". He's had his struggles. Maybe not lately, but damn. Give him credit when due. When you don't have a case, yell RACE!

[Edited 10/13/11 4:30am] Well, as someone who (clearly) doesnt feel that everything Prince has done is genius and perfect perhaps im n an alright position to suggest that if you like lotusflow3rs tracks like Crimson and Clover, $, Feel Better..etc you might like to check out: 3121 Musicology Gold Experience Maybe Emancipation and D&P Of you like your 'plinky plonky' or your 'political guff' (including out there views) then knock yourself out with; ONA (piano) The Rainbow Children

I never do get the support Lotusflow3r does get on here.
Yes: just like on The Rainbow Children the instrumentation sounds more 'intellectual' and 'artistic' (and: without the Darth Vader-voice even) then that on Rave, The Chocolate invasion or MPLsound, but in terms of songwriting its a mediocre album. There isn't a single significant composition to be found on this album. Next to that you have some very confused lyrics from somebody who obviously doesnt go outside and thinks he knows the world (NOT): Colonized mind, Dreamer.
I know, 3121 is a calculated MOR-album, but in the end its a grade better then Lotusflow3r.

Great album. Just amazing!!! From 2004-2009 he knew what he was doing with his music. All of those albums are great and Planet Earth and Lotusflow3r being the peak

:yeahthat: I think the majority if praise it get comes from a sense of relief that's it's half normal compared to some of the post-98 stuff

When I first got it (and it took me a while to get over the price tag of teh tripple set and the fact that i never wanted 1/3 of it because it wasnt Prince), it did have that hands-rubbing-together feel of "this is more like it"...but that soon wore off after i took note of, like you say, the crazy lyrics about anti-evolution (its a fact - FACT...or moreto the point Creationism isnt fact) or the instrumentals tahtI just couldnt get into...and now it gets palyed when i want to listen to tehsame 3 or 4 tracks
