I had to try very hard to like this era, and sure enough was a pretty awesome album, despite Tony M's best efforts to ruin it.

The music was pretty surface and straightforward compared to something like Lovesexy or Parade, but it sounded great and had some incredible arrangements & incredible musicians playing in the band.

He updated his style and his sound for better or worse, and ultimately even though it was not the direction I would have liked for him to go, I would say it was a change for the better if simply because it kept people guessing.

My favorite Prince album, just ahead of Parade. I enjoy it from beginning to end and I think it's filled with so many accessible songs and potential hits. The marketing and single releases were really weird, though.

I love the album.

Prince is best when he's showing off--not when he's restrained. Whenever he's restrained, he just ends up sounding paint-by-numbers.

The symbol album is a messy, often embarassing, over-the-top eargasm. I love it.

If he had released it back-to-back with the Gold Experience with proper marketing, he would have easily had major hits on his hands.
