Those scenes were empty...just for show with no love. Using the "God" instrumental for that had many people wondering how he could view sex in that mode and "praise" in another mode...pretty plastic,to say the least. Prince's relationship with Appolonia in the movie was very tumultuous...one minute he's fingering her, the next minute he's slapping her. In that case, it's a plastic love affair (no pun intended). I still have to agree with Anji that it was depressing. There are so many other definitive songs that define the love between a man and a woman and God. The scene was just...you know? Typos..... Anji said Do you think Prince slapping her had anything to do with his upbringing, at least in the film? The Kid's relationship with his girlfried is an illustration of one of the themes of the movie: The Kid's struggle to avoid the same mistakes his father had made. He's in danger of messing up his career, he lashes out and beats his woman, he even considers taking his life as a means of escape, just like his father (that scene where he contemplates the rope and sees himself swinging from the rafters). The reason you're expected to feel like dancing to Baby I'm A Star at the end of the film is because The Kid reaches a crossroads where he can either continue down a destructive path or turn his life around by reaching out to others (Lisa and Wendy) and being guided by the power of love (Purple Rain). He chooses the high road and we are left with the hope that he can pull himself up by his bootstraps and realize his potential. Trite? Yes. Cliched? Yes. Classic underdog-wins-in-the-end? Yes. That's why the movie was successful. No over-complicated plot and a happy ending. The music kicked butt. The Prince world/mystique was perfectly timed with the mood of the country and the marketing machine was in high gear. It all added up to make Prince a household name and give him the kind of exposure he needed to cement the cross over from R& B to pop charts that he began with Dirty Mind and truly began to realize with 1999. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I believe it is part of it yes.. a major part of it..but it also bullshit. Just an excuse for him to be dirty as well as a gimmick. "Climb in my fur."

In the movie yes..he was mirroring what he grew up with..how conflict is handled etc. "Climb in my fur."

Please...the film 'Purple Rain' is a CLASSIC!!! What's up with you people? Time and time again I get the feeling of watching it because it has a GREAT story!!! I disagree that it was just mostly 'the music' that did it for the film, and the bad acting??? A lot of people remember this film because of the memorable performance from Prince, on and off stage, that was highly credible, just as each of the others were also. See it and believe it... Prince was a Star B4 PR* What he had done prior set his well deserved path & foundation 2 stardom.
The movie wasn't about great Oscar bound actors, but it was just a vessel 4 the music. Hand in hand type thing...4 its era Purple Rain I felt was the sheeeit & a classic in its own right... I know PR represented a very fun & one of akind time 4 me*

I don't find Purple Rain depressing or embarassing, I
find it to be a wonderful music film. I love this movie. I love the music, the characters, the funny catch phrases. Don't forget that this film inspired many people when it came out, and to this day it's considered one of the best music films of all time. My name is BISCUIT...and I am funky!

Anji said: I remember watching Purple Rain and wondering 'what the fuck is so special about this that made everyone herald Prince as the next major rock star?' The movie does not have any outstanding actors/actresses and seemed liked you'd have to at least be partially interested in Prince to even want to pay the price of admission. The sexual chemistry was not exactly alluring. Afterall, Prince was not in the John Travolta mould for attracting women. I found it pretty fucking depressing, so where the fuck was the 'feel good' factor for non-Prince FAMS?
I can only conclude that Warners felt Prince made Purple Rain's music with the sole intent of becoming global, and they believed it enough to push the movie to such an extent that both the music and film reinforced one another. But was the music that powerful that it managed to get people to sit through that movie, and enjoy it? What actually happened back then? Anji the whole purple rain album/movie/videos/concerts were an EVENT it was like a great big tidal wave to surf on so if you werent there at the time experiencing it your not gonna be caught up in the whole hoopla

Y'all trippin' - PR is a great film, one of my favorites. For a bunch of first time actors, the lot of them did pretty good. Decent story, great music & you get to look @ Prince for 90 minutes - what more do you need???

Purple Rain was nothing more than a movie. A good movie that happened to have Prince in it. People have had time to sit in the privacy of there homes and tear the movie apart by over analyzing it but, when it came out, it was just a good movie. The supporting characters made Prince look good because Prince only did what he does best. Play music. If you look at Fast Times at Ridgemont High, American Graffiti or any of the other Saturday morning 80's slew of movies, you can tear them apart as well but at the time they worked. Purple Rain was a great movie that got more people interested in what Prince was doing with his music. Someone mentioned that they were 4 when Purple Rain came out. I was 24. Because of that movie, a 4 year old was suddenly interested in who this Prince person was. That type of thing happened all over and that's what propelled Prince's Rock Star status IMO.
