MPLSoUND is awesome. There are so many killer jams on this album - "Here", "Ur Gonna C Me", "Ol Skool Company", "Valentina", "Dance 4 Me".... I even dig "There'll Never B Another Like Me" and "Chocolate Box" although not as much as when the album came out.
People underestimate this album, it's up there with 3121 as one of the best Prince albums of the 2010's. |

I can at least agree with this.

It has some good songs but has way to many ballads 4 my taste but yea I would say 3121 is his best post millennium

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.... to which end, I will from hereonin stay as silent as the Mayor of Silentown, Silentville, in the province of Silentopolis, on the continent of Silentia, on the planet Silentios, in the Silentari system, of the Silentarium galaxy.

Edit down "There'll Never B Another Like Me" around 4:17, and it goes well into Chocolate Box

It took me quite a few listens but I eventually got to appreciate this one, I really like chocolate box, which I know isn't a favourite on here and all the others you mentioned. A good fun album that cheers me up. Of course, no where near being a classic though and I prefer Musicology, PE and The rainbow Children.

I am the biggest fan of the Minneapolis Sound, but this album doesn't cut it for me. Weak beats, weak songwriting and weak lyrics make a weak album. The only ones I liked were Old Skool Company and No More Candy 4 U. 20Ten did a much better job as far as Prince doing the Minneapolis Sound IMHO... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I really dig Ol' Skool Company, the funk, the melody and the contemporary lyrics. One of Prince's best efforts in many years. The album as a whole is like most of Prince's albums from the 00s, good but not great and with an even quality.

Glad someone said it. I like it a lot. Honest to christ, this Cd catches more shit than Rave does. I'll never understand Prince fans.

"Here" is strong song. So is the "Controversy" era retro sounding "No More Candy 4 U"
I'm not sure why "Never B Another Like Me" gets the hate. It's good minimal, funny, funky song. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Ol Skool Company.......Ya hear?! One of the baddest tracks i've heard him throwdown. This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

I'm with you on those choices. OSC is the clear highlight though, its just streets ahead of anything else on the album. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Some good tracks on there...we know which those are but I prefer LotusFlower.
And post 2000, The Rainbow Children is the best Prince album and not 3121. Just sayin'.

This album is pure dee garbage!!! Every damn thing on it. You can tell his heart was not into doing this record. He just wanted to do an album with most of it having a lot of the Linn drum machine (read: actual samples in ProTools) so that people could lap it up as if it was something worth getting excited about (because he saw how people were loving recent chart toppers that had Linn sounds in them). Noooo, buddy! It stank worse than 2-hour old, moist shit! It was like he added weak Linn samples to a lot of the songs as afterthoughts! And the songs weren't even that good to begin with.
There is not one track I'd ever pull this monstrosity out for to hear. It was even laughable that John Blackwell gave a newspaper interview and said songs from this album that were played to him by Prince sounded like the funky cuts done during the Controversy days. HA!! Like Prince didn't tell him to mention that in the interview to get the fans all lathered up and wet with anticipation! We smart ones saw through that bullshit though, I assure you. He always loves to say how his current shit is as great as xxx album from his gloried past to try to convince the fans he's "still got it". Either that, or he's just trying to convince himself.

Naming this album "MPLSOUND" was a slap in the face to the folks who have been around long enough to know better.

Apart from the awesome Dance 4 Me, it's crap.
Plus I bought the digital download so I can't even use it as a coaster.

Agreed. For me MPLSoUND was his weakest album of the 2004-present era but he bounced back with 20Ten.

Still, I think the O7 outdid Prince as far as delevering a Minneapolis Sound album. Condensate is even better/more fun than 20Ten. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

There'll Never B Another Like Me: classic Chocolate Box: pathetic attempt at creating a 00s shit-hop single Dance 4 Me: classic U r Gonna C Me: intriguing intro, but the song is nearly as bad as The Arms of Orion Here: overrated and forgettable Valentina: dull, repetitive and boring Better with Time: completely unremarkable, I don't even remember how it sounds Ol' Skool Company: bag of crap, even worse than Chocolate Box No More Candy 4 U: very silly, but nevertheless it's the third good song of the album, and a decent sequel of goofy/old songs like Horny Toad or Jack U Off...
overall: one of his weakest albums of the 00s, and of his career. The good songs are good but the bad songs are extremely bad. If this was intended to be an unofficial/indirect sequel to 1999, the results were pathetic...this sounds like 00s shit-hop, not early 80s MPLS...the only positive thing I can say about the whole album is that is, by far, more entertaining/listenable than the Slaughterhouse/Chocolate Invasion, half of Emancipation or even NPS...
20Ten is 1.000.000 times better...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I was nodding my head in agreement with just about everything that you typed until the bit about Emancipation. One day you people are going to realise that Emancipation is a masterpiece.
I am a bit curious, which songs would you consider to be the weak half of Emancipation? I'm guessing the usual suspects ("We Gets Up," "Mr. Happy" and "Da, Da, Da") but what else?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Why do I feel like I'm on different planet than the rest of you fans?! 'Here' is a masterpiece...the harmonies are just SICK. As for Emancipation, I really don't get the hate for that record. Perhaps I'm a little biased, as living in Chicago at the time allowed me to see the record release party, as well as many of the JOTY shows, but I absolutely LOVE that album. There are a few weak songs, but the rest is just sonic bliss. Never has Prince sounded so mature in his approach. Occupy Alphabet Street!
