Prince and his former proteges

With the new album coming out by The Original 7ven and the recent release of the Fdeluxe album. Do you think Prince has further alienated himself from past "Minneapolis Sound " fans as well as current and potential fans? Is this his way of emancipating all of his past groups or is he just being a jerk? Does he even own the previous names of these groups or does Warner Bros.? I am confused and sad because I loved all of these bands and other Minn. acts from the 80's. They all made H.S. fun for me back then!!

This isn't a WB thing. It's Prince.

I don't think this is anything to do with "emancipating" past groups - that is a very, very, very generous definition of what Prince is doing.

As is my understanding, Prince does own the rights to The Time, but does not The Family - which has been used by several groups throughout the years. However, Prince being a curmudgeonly multi-millionaire - it would be foolish to legally pursue the use of the name through the courts, since a lengthy and costly legal battle would've only end in empty pockets for the band members, without enough funds to finish the album, and having it's release tied in legal knots for years to come no doubt.

The Time may have a similar situation, but I was under the impression he had a much clearer legal claim to that name.

As it is, both bands took the high road in the interest of getting an album out. There's care and love for the music between these people and their shared history, that much is clear. So it doesn't really matter to us what the label says, yes it's a shame, but I don't think Prince is really hurting anyone else other than himself here.

^I don't think Prince is hurting himself either. He probably has a "been there, done that" approach to these 2 bands that are still trying to cash in on an act Prince created for them in the first place. So why should he give up a name that he owns and that was his idea all along?
I haven't heared anything by Fdeluxe so I can't say anything about them, but if Prince is not involved in what they are doing, why bring him into this?
