Shelby J's relationship with Prince

After reading a brief interview of NPG member, Shelby J, eye realise how many of us, including myself, need to take a step back before putting our perceived personality of Prince before his real connection with us, which is his art, his music.

So much is said about Prince...he's this, he's that...but none of us know him. Shelby J, like other members of the NPG and also the Revolution, have interacted with Prince on a closer level than we can imagine...through music (live love)

Dig this. She says:

He’s very generous with his light. That touches my heart because he doesn’t have to be. That’s my brother. So, when I’m singing and looking at him we have a connection. Either you have it or you don’t when you perform with people. I have so much respect and love for him and I know that he loves me as a sister. It’s just real and I’m really thankful to be part of his band and doing what I love to do on this level and learning from him.

Found here > look

Can we learn from Prince...who is more than a personality to be critiqued, but a artist whose work may be analysed on different levels - whether musically, emotionally, spiritutally?

Well, these thoughts spring from the fact that Shelby J, who is in the current manifestation of the NPG appreciates and adores Prince...there's a reason why

It comes across very clear in Nothing Compares 2 U.

I think they are ready to duet Diamonds & Pearls

Love Shelby J !

I would probably say the same thing about my boss during a public interview.

Yes, Shelby J has an awesome voice. When Prince and Shelby J sings "Nothing Compares 2 U" together, they do a beautiful job of it. I'd love to hear Shelby J sing "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". She has the voice to carry that song in a spiritual kind of way. I remember when Aretha Franklin (Auntie ReeRee, if you will) sang that song on an award show a while back. Aretha blew the audience away with how powerful she sang that song, and had some people in the audience in tears, because she touched their spirit with the way she sang it. I bet Shelby J can sing it like that too.

I know that was on a few set lists recently (start of the year, maybe?). I remember, because I'd just been listening to a UK group called Black Voices singing it a cappella and was really loving it, so it was a lovely coincidence to see that the NPG ladies were probably singing it half a world away at the same time I was listening to it here smile

Nice post NelsonR and important sentiment, thank you rose

You mean on the previous European 2011 tour? confuse I don't remember seeing that song on any of the setlists from the recent European tour that was posted in the concerts section.

Truly on both the song choice and the emotional outburst (for lack of a better word > Auntie ReeRee). That's what I'm saying...Shelby has that power, and it is more than physical. Hey Prince, please allow Shelby J to sing "Bridge Over Troubled Waters."

Each song lasted about 2-4 minutes long. It was mainly Cassandra on keys.

Wow, thanks. Had no idea they sang that song at all. Maybe they'll do it again in the future. Both Shelby and Liv have the voices to carry that song.

many musicians go through life spending time w/ the same band or group of artists for many, many years. this is good. at the same time, some bands break up after many years of producing and sharing the most positive art. this is natural. with Prince, whether before the advent of the Revolution, during the Revolution stage and then the entire NPG dispensation, whether of experiences positive or negative, I don't think there is one voice which would not acknowledge that through the natural vibe of it all - the Prince experience was a learning one, and also beneficial in infinite ways; ways that changed their lives forever.
