Whilst it clearly is heartfelt and sincere, I just don't find much in the way of 'raw edge' on that record. Whilst I think the Prince album is excellent, I have often wondered how Prince managed to recover from what sounds like a very inconsequential first record, impact-wise.

"Raw Edge" doesnt have to be apparent on every record for it to be good. Get Dirty Mind for that. This was a highly polished first outing for a young budding genius and it was an indicator of the greatness to come

dude. there is nothin polished about dirty mind...

...that's why i love it. nod

Clappy, Miami meant that For You was polished, not Dirty Mind. He's advising me to listen to DM if I want raw edge, which both you and I do. lol

Nah, Dirty Mind was a damned demo tape. lol

For You is a great little album--nothing masterful or mind blowing, but nice songs. Love the ballads and the naive sentiment. Songs are more important than words.

Dirty Mind was more sexual, more bent. Borrowed from new wave and punk, but without the over wrought angst. Prince just had a good time on this one. Funked his way into our hearts. At least the hearts of the true old schoolers.

woot!
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I take back what I said about this album, about it not having an edge. I think it's definitely there, I was just looking for something else. I guess the Prince that I am used to. I'm really digging the vibe, it's unlike any of his other albums yet you can still hear how later songs have developed from it's musicianship. Excellent insight into purple music...

Michael Jackson's solo albums before off the wall.
1) Got to be there (1972)
2) Ben (1972)
3) music and me (1973)
4) forever Michael (1975)
