1986: The year Prince created his best ever works... Listening to outtakes as well as released songs, it seems that some of his best work was created in 1986.
We know the released stuff (SOTT plus Dream Factory project) but on top of this these outtakes are listed as being recorded then:

I think this was Prince's peak year and I feel that the Dream Factory if released would have been an undisputed classic, much better than SOTT IMO. You can just hear the raw energy and excitement on the songs from this period... Shame he and W&L parted company before they could be released...

It certainly was a highly productive period in his career, and one which I find myself returning to on a regular basis. Looking back, it was amazing what was recorded and/or assembled (album wise) during that one year alone, whether they were released or not, it was such a prolific time for Prince. The abandoned The Flesh album, Parade, Madhouse 8, The Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, work on Jill Jones' album, studio work with Sheila E for her 3rd album, the Camille album. Not to mention Under The Cherry Moon, US gigs, a European tour, gigs in Japan and whatever else. Breathtaking really.

Joy in Repetition was done in '86 too. As were Shockadelica, Superfunkicalifragisexy, the first Madhouse album, Bob George, Le Grind, Violet Blue, Rock Hard In A Funky Place, Wouldn't You Love To Love Me, Wally....
a superb year, for sure.
There's also still more unreleased stuff from '86 that we've never heard, like the half-completed soundtrack to The Dawn (which included the songs "Coco Boyz" and "When The Dawn of The Morning Comes"). Other unreleased songs from '86 include "Egg Plant", "Twosday" and a track Prince produced for Tony LeMans called "C'Est La Vie".

moderatorWithout a doubt this is hands down the most creative and prolific peak of Prince's legend, closely followed by 82-84, and lastly 93-95.
However, that damn 1986-87 is mind blowing. We already know of plenty of songs from this era, yet think of the songs that we don't know about. One day they will hopefully all come out. I wouldn't care if some songs were terrible, just to hear where Prince was at at that time would make it worth the while. __________________________________________________

Yup, it's the re-worked version that he offered to Michael Jackson for the "Bad" album. I like this version the best, although the circulating version is in terrible quality.
It's musically similar to the version that was eventually released by Taja Sevelle in '88, although with Prince singing it obviously.

The original version is. It was reworked in 86, however it retained most of the bare tracks. __________________________________________________

I thought Sexual Suicide was recorded in 1985 during the Parade sessions. Btw, a bit off topic but I think he should have added the 3rd version of Witness 4 the Prosecution to The Black Album cuz it sounds like it was made for that particular record. |
