Personally I don't think there are many soundboards that can match these two shows in terms of the music played, but there are a ton of soundboards out there with varying degrees of quality.

http://main.thedigitalgarden.org/ This is a brilliant, easy to use site to give you an idea of titles, quality and tracklists etc. You cannot obtain recordings from this site though.

One of the latest soundboards to have a lot of people drooling is the "From Dusk Till Dawn" 2 cd set from EYE. It is the soundboard audio from the two 2009 Montreux shows which are currently doing the rounds on dvd.

This is a list of some soundboards out there, this list is not complete. (originally posted by squirrelgrease)

Soundboards of course don't just cover live shows, there are soundboard rehearsals and more out there. I could go on and on and on, there is just so much good stuff out there. Also, just because a recording is soundboard does not guarantee high quality, the two s/boards you have are among the best available, some audience recordings are better than some s/boards, so don't ignore stuff that has been recorded from the audience, some of them are amazing.

Good luck with your hunt.

If you want to hear a newer soundboard recording the 2009 Montreux shows are available.

Can someone take the list above and give us the top 10 in terms of sound quality that you would recommend and what the name of the release is called?

I'd like to get the essentials without having to do a million hours of reseasrch, but I'm only interested in stuff with excellent sound quality.

The Omni, opening for Rick James is one of the essentials.

This question has been asked MANY TIMES here, dude. Just do a Google search, and I'm SURE you'll get what you seek.

You can not go wrong with the City Lights set. They are currently being "remastered" and expanded (I think vol. 5 of the updated series is due out soon) but the "old" versions sound great too.

Several of the old original "City Lights" recordings were worked on and improved by 4DaFunk and released. It is these that make up some of the content on the Sabotage "City Lights Remastered" series.

I'm glad you placed the remastered word in inverted comma's.

I pretty much gave up on prince after Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth. Then I discovered his live shows are readily available to download. I'm always amazed as to how P can take a turd album track and make it kick when performed live. I'm definately back in the fold now -I even bought and liked Lotus Flower ... mostly. Like the OP I prefer EX quality (who doesn't) but like the DigitalGardener said there are plenty of EX audiance recordings you'd be mad to ignore. There are definately many audience recordings that have better sound overall to some sounboard recordings. Here's what I'd recommend to someone (like me) who just getting into the unreleased live recordings:

Dusk til Dawn (There is no better sound quality, but you have to like P's Jazz sound, fortunately I do)

Melwig 2Night (Both shows but the second: What's My Name, Beutiful Strange, Guitar, Mutiny, Chocolate ... nuff said. I cant help but think P had his long time fans in mind with this set list)

Saginaw '82 (Brilliant extended version of Head)

Osaka '89

Viage 2 (Bit to much Shelby J in the middle but great sound and nice intrumental oppening section)

Le New Morning (4df version. A classic show and my first ever boot from way, way, way back (as He's Got the Look). Big thanks to those who cleaned this up and freed it!)

Return of the Bump Squad (The Gold era soundboard)

Tales from a Spanish Harem

Paris 17-06-87 (another great 4df)

Emporium (not the greatest in terms of sound but the energy and funk of this set make up for it IMO)

Shark Tank (great acoustic section in the middle makes this one noteworthy)

Whole Lotta Love 4 Paris

Hollywood Lovesexy Aftershow

Love or $ (to funny)

Club Black

Footsteps to Filmore

3121 Las Vegas Vol 5 (ironic eh wink )

Bird Rehresal

I'm still out there looking each day so this isn't meant to be a complete list. I've only been at it for a couple of months. All the above are out there - as they say here "google is your friend"
