I agree with you about the nonsense threads, but this forum is called Prince: Music and More. I'm not defending this type of subject matter, I myself find 99% of them to be awful and a waste of forum space, but until we have a forum specifically dedicated to Prince's Music and nothing more, then we have no choice but to be patient and put up with the less desireable (to some) threads. Also, all said and done, we are not forced to read or participate in such threadism.
This is something that needs to be looked into, thanks
I think it'd be very difficult to separate the "Music" from the "More" - sometimes there will be 10 replies within a seemingly non-music related thread that has interesting discussioin of music, and there will be a "Music" thread that then gets into speculation about his personal life. I think people just ought use discretion and judgment when posting and when choosing what thread to click.
A "newbie" thread doesn't make sense - how do you know if "I love Purple Rain" is a newbie thread or not? And why can't 30 yr fans discuss, share knowledge, be enthusiastic, wax nostalgic, whatever, with newer fans?
Anyway, separating out all those topics would just be a nightmare for the moderators - moving threads from one category to another all the time.

I choose 3121 Las Vegas . Or anything related to the 3121 era. I absolutely love that era and 3121 is my favorite album as well.
I also want to thank you OldFriends4Sale for making these threads, I really love them and everyone is right about finally having positivity, real info and appreciation to Prince (instead of the bashing lol) in the forums.
Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!! |

(Bolded part) Absolutely..which is why once I see the titles of those type threads...I bypass the majority of them.
Maybe in addition to having a forum for Prince the Man and one for Prince the Music, there could be a Newbie Forum too... I feel kinda bad for the fan who just discovered "All My Dreams" when they get their vibe harshed by cynical old farts like me...
I don't think that there should be a separate forum for "Newbies." People join this website to be around other Prince fans. The newbies should be welcomed instead of ran away by the veterans. Think of it like this...you more "seasoned" Prince fans are here to expose and educate the newbies. With them, you have an opportunity to share your knowledge with someone who's actually interested in what you have to say. Who better to answer a question then one of the vets. Instead, what some of you do is "verbally" stomp the hell of the newcomers whenever they ask a question that they genuinely don't know.
The mods could make this easier for everyone. When reviewing the post is reviewed (if they review the post), they can answer the question directly, refer the OP to the answer if its in Princepedia, or post a link to a prior thread that addressed the same topic and then lock the post. That way the newbie can get their question answered and the vets aren't exposed to yet another post on a topic that been discussed a million times.
Everyone has to understand this site is open to everyone and that we are all, to varying degrees, Prince fans. Instead what we have is a "newbie versus veteran" community and that only makes for an unpleasant environment.

I agree. It's so annoying to see some "veterans" despising the new fans. If they don't like the same questions or discussions asked time and time again, they can simply ignore the question and don't take part in the discussion; if they do take part, they should do it with some respect.
Maybe they could create a forum for themselves and leave the rest alone. They: a) are like that only in the internet, then they are cowards; b) are like that always, then I'm glad I don't get to know them.
Maybe I shouldn't care about these conflicts, which don't concern me directly, maybe these things shouldn't annoy me. But hey, that's the price of an education.
That's what I like about OldFriends4Sale. He respects all fans and enjoys talking with those who are willing to learn. Fortunately, there are others here with us who are also like that.

I think we can teach each other to respect new fans. mAybe I can talk 2 ben about putting something under a persons aviator that says something like Fan as of 1999 or Fan as of 2011 or New Fan Be Gentle lol something like that
But I think as more fans new & old get on board of trying to turn the site around 4 the better they will learn to be more patient, either not respond to a question that has been asked before or celebrate the new fans enthusiasm

With all due respect Oldfriends, to me that sounds like placing people in catagories that they maybe do want to be placed in. Having a note under someones avatar stating when one became a fan will not stop, or help to stop certain people talking to new fans (or otherwise) in a certain way. This is an open and public forum. People will say what they please, some people will be more negative than others, this idea that you have of trying to turn the site around for the better does have it's merits, of course it does. However, I feel that such talk could also bring out peoples feelings for the worse, thus making a situation that is not really a major problem on this forum in the first place into a rather ugly one.

I'm just throwing around ideas like everyone else here to get feedback.
Please don't tip toe around me, say what you think, I'm here listening.
I don't even know if it's something that can be done. And I think more of it being an option if a member want to add via their profile. If it's even an option again. So I wasn't even taking that too seriously.
But a lot of members do feel it's a major problem. There are many member 'very timid' about posting for such reasons. That to me is a major problem. Because we do want people to feel like they can.
I've seen it since I've been here, as soon as a question is asked 5 people jump on it with very rude comments or the
There are also certain rules that moderate:People will say what they please. Being negative is ok as long as it doesn't come out in attacks on other people and rudeness ... as well as the threads created that fill the forums that don't really contribute to a 'community'

And as for your second point, I understand that too, people should be able to say what they please within moderation, or within the rules of moderation.

Here is a thought: If a new member asks a question that most other fans know the answer to, just answer the question. They will then know the answer and either a discussion will follow, or the thread will eventually fall off. Some folks act like they have the lockdown on being Prince fans (or anti-fans) around here. We were all new once. There is simply NO reason to jump down somebody's throat for asking a question. There are no stupid questions, only stupid people. Don't believe me? Follow a stupid kid home and see if somebody stupid don't answer the door! Granted, there are certain guidelines to follow when joining ANY message board. It's always best to lurk for a while and get the feel of the place before you post. At least read through several threads to get the feel for the general atmoshphere. I've said it before, this place is NOTHING compared to the Ween forum. Those guys will rip your balls off if you aren't careful! I'm just saying... |
