This is definitely one of my favorite eras and albums. The album, in my opinion, is one of the many albums that show his genius. It is very consistent throughout (although orgasm is plain weird lol). I love every single song on the album as well, but the best songs on the album are Space and Pheromone.
This album is pure poetry, I mean all of the songs are full of imagery. This is definitely in my top 10 Prince albums ! Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Very overrated Prince album on the org.
To me it was the first Prince album i was really dissapointed in: both songwriting and production-wise its Prince on autopilot for me, very formulaic: songs like Space and Pheromone are among the weakest Prince songs i know, Orgasm and Solo are more like sketches then songs, and the interludes (as on all his nineties albums) are useless.
I only like Papa, Dark and Letitgo: they arent classics, but at least they have decent compositions, and i love the horn arrangements on Come (while i the lyrics and sex-sounds on it annoy me).
The album indeed has a rather unified, doomy / dark sound for such a collection of obligational material, but it doesnt save the lack of good songwriting and instrumentation on the album for me.

Growing up & listening to Prince in the house, required me to develop a very loud cough at certain times during certain songs, just in case my parents walked passed my room & heard anything unsavoury. To this day when I hear Come, I imagine he is eating a mango or an over-ripe nectarine for THOSE sound effects....at least that's what the innocent me thinks!

This pic makes me wonder if he was influenced by the Goth scene; not the metal end of it but more the ethereal style. I wonder who he was listening to at the time. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

That's what I was thinking too, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions. That is not the case though. The majority of these songs were done in early 1993, before the split with WB even took place. Prince did a lot of these songs in his live shows 93-94, so it's not like he just made up these songs as throw aways to fulfill any obligations to WB. In my opinion, it's one of the best 90s releases. Although I prefer the shorter, more dance friendly version of Come from the Beautiful Experience concert, at which I was at...I might add. I like the longer more quitet stormish version. Mostly because the horns are to die for!!!

I know, There are certain albums u wish he did just a bit more with:Around the World in a Day, SOTT, the Black Album & this album. I know why he didn't do much with it at the time, but he short changes himself when he does

The the album project was put together to quickly fulfill his WB obligations, right? Not talking about the songs. Ok Orgasm is serious filler... but the project, even by the time Gold came out which is one reason he was done with Come before it even started, but by the time Gold released he was moved on 2 the next and trying to get his contract done, moving toward Emancipation. Chaos & Disorder was another 'project 2 quickly fulfill his WB obligations'

I don't think at 35 he was and Emo, maybe some Gothic influences but not seeing how a middle aged man was an Emo back in 1992 or 1993. Around the world in a day is another top five favority and so is 3121 and all 3 of my favorites show his going outside any one label. I find that fantastic but how do you sell that? Who do you sell that to? Come may appeal to fans of Kate Bush or Tori Amos, but he was working a totally different group of fans.
So my point is who was Warner suppose to market this album to?

I think in the 1980's he would have been able to 'sell it to' the audience easier than in the 2000's He cult following was way bigger in 1985. I mean the video for Raspberry Beret got an award for something back then. I think the album is full of quality songs + B sides. If he just had more videos along the line of Raspberry Beret - Girls n Boys Kiss Mountains with the quality of photographers he was working with. I think more mini concerts featuring the songs, live renditions. I could see Prince & the Revolution doing a live rendition of Condition of the Heart at the Oscars or something with a fuller band for all the instrumentation: full orchestra Susannah & Jill on vocals Sheila E on added percussion. It could have shown a more 'mature' side of Prince's music range etc It was such a colorful album
Same with the Black album he could have done a total 'underground' vibe 2 it. Not as far but something similar to what Madonna was doing with the Justify My Love video Sex book etc Girl Show... totally put that aggression in action

He doesn't really cultivate that audience. I don't have the Black album. But when I think of his movie "Under the Cherry Moon" and it's vintage feel, their is a different side to him that has nothing to do with Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown or Joni Mitchell for that matter. A side of him that takes from very old movies too.
Madonna is one that understands the business side of show business. She is a tireless self promoter who knows that the actual craft is only half the job done. I don't have any of her work but I admire her work ethic and the way she thinks it through. With everything around the movie "truth or dare" tying in she has a great marketing strategy set up.
Prince sucks at marketing. Just the fact that he never promoted his perfumes, did a half ass job of promoting any album in well over 10 years etc speaks volumes. He also is extremely uncomfortable being interviewed. There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

I remember when this 1st came out, I liked all the tracks except orgasm & solo, I still feel that way but space has grown on me over those years. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15
