This is definitely one of my favorite eras and albums. The album, in my opinion, is one of the many albums that show his genius. It is very consistent throughout (although orgasm is plain weird lol). I love every single song on the album as well, but the best songs on the album are Space and Pheromone.

This album is pure poetry, I mean all of the songs are full of imagery. This is definitely in my top 10 Prince albums biggrin!

Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Very overrated Prince album on the org. wink

To me it was the first Prince album i was really dissapointed in: both songwriting and production-wise its Prince on autopilot for me, very formulaic: songs like Space and Pheromone are among the weakest Prince songs i know, Orgasm and Solo are more like sketches then songs, and the interludes (as on all his nineties albums) are useless.

I only like Papa, Dark and Letitgo: they arent classics, but at least they have decent compositions, and i love the horn arrangements on Come (while i the lyrics and sex-sounds on it annoy me).

The album indeed has a rather unified, doomy / dark sound for such a collection of obligational material, but it doesnt save the lack of good songwriting and instrumentation on the album for me.

er

Growing up & listening to Prince in the house, required me to develop a very loud cough at certain times during certain songs, just in case my parents walked passed my room & heard anything unsavoury.lol To this day when I hear Come, I imagine he is eating a mango or an over-ripe nectarine for THOSE sound effects....at least that's what the innocent me thinks! wink

This pic makes me wonder if he was influenced by the Goth scene; not the metal end of it but more the ethereal style. I wonder who he was listening to at the time.

That's what I was thinking too, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions. That is not the case though. The majority of these songs were done in early 1993, before the split with WB even took place. Prince did a lot of these songs in his live shows 93-94, so it's not like he just made up these songs as throw aways to fulfill any obligations to WB. In my opinion, it's one of the best 90s releases. Although I prefer the shorter, more dance friendly version of Come from the Beautiful Experience concert, at which I was at...I might add. cool

The the album project was put together to quickly fulfill his WB obligations, right?

Not talking about the songs. Ok Orgasm is serious filler... but the project, even by the time Gold came out which is one reason he was done with Come before it even started, but by the time Gold released he was moved on 2 the next and trying to get his contract done, moving toward Emancipation. Chaos & Disorder was another 'project 2 quickly fulfill his WB obligations'

I don't think at 35 he was and Emo, maybe some Gothic influences but not seeing how a middle aged man was an Emo back in 1992 or 1993.

Around the world in a day is another top five favority and so is 3121 and all 3 of my favorites show his going outside any one label. I find that fantastic but how do you sell that? Who do you sell that to? Come may appeal to fans of Kate Bush or Tori Amos, but he was working a totally different group of fans.
It is sort of like when an actor becomes well known for comedy and you put them in a serious drama set in the 18 hundreds. You have to hope that the drama fans will open up their minds and give this actor a chance because really, if your not into period pieces your not going to show. I am thinking of a Dan Ackroyd movie suddenly in which the lead was the actress from the xfactor, Gillian Anderson. Both did an excellent job(the movie was "House of Mirth" ) but people just did not see these two actors staring in a period piece. The movie did not do as well as it should have. The same thing for another movie I love "Mary Reilly" staring Julia Roberts.

So my point is who was Warner suppose to market this album to?

I think in the 1980's he would have been able to 'sell it to' the audience easier than in the 2000's

He cult following was way bigger in 1985. I mean the video for Raspberry Beret got an award for something back then. I think the album is full of quality songs + B sides. If he just had more videos along the line of Raspberry Beret - Girls n Boys Kiss Mountains with the quality of photographers he was working with. I think more mini concerts featuring the songs, live renditions.

I could see Prince & the Revolution doing a live rendition of Condition of the Heart at the Oscars or something with a fuller band for all the instrumentation: full orchestra Susannah & Jill on vocals Sheila E on added percussion. It could have shown a more 'mature' side of Prince's music range etc

It was such a colorful album

Same with the Black album he could have done a total 'underground' vibe 2 it. Not as far but something similar to what Madonna was doing with the Justify My Love video Sex book etc Girl Show... totally put that aggression in action

He doesn't really cultivate that audience. I don't have the Black album. But when I think of his movie "Under the Cherry Moon" and it's vintage feel, their is a different side to him that has nothing to do with Jimmy Hendrix, James Brown or Joni Mitchell for that matter. A side of him that takes from very old movies too.

Madonna is one that understands the business side of show business. She is a tireless self promoter who knows that the actual craft is only half the job done. I don't have any of her work but I admire her work ethic and the way she thinks it through. With everything around the movie "truth or dare" tying in she has a great marketing strategy set up.

Prince sucks at marketing. Just the fact that he never promoted his perfumes, did a half ass job of promoting any album in well over 10 years etc speaks volumes. He also is extremely uncomfortable being interviewed.

prince's 1994 5 cut cd maxi single 'space' from his 1994 cd 'come'

Space

T-minus 60 seconds and counting
Arm light on
Switching command 2 internal {x2}
Missile and new count in sync?
Affirmative
Ready
Check
Affirmative {x2}

(Space)

I never been one 2 hide my feelings
Baby, U blow my mind
I painted your face upon my ceiling
I stare at it all the time (I...)
Imagine myself inside your bedroom (Oh I...)
Imagine myself in your sky (U...)
U are the reason there's bass in my boom (Oh U...)
U are the reason I'm high

BRIDGE:
If U and I were just 10 feet closer
Then I'd make U understand
That everything I wanna do 2 your body, baby
I would do 2 your hand
Then U'd be hip 2 the deep rush
Deeper than the boom of the bass
With every other flick of the pink plush
The closer we get 2 the space

(The space) {x3}
Don't U want 2 go?
(The space) - Where the souls go
(The space) - Where the tears flow
(The space) - Where the love grows
Do U want 2 go?

I never been one 4 this thing obsession
But just keep your eye on my hips
The circles they make will be my confession
Just say the word and I'll strip
I've had dreams of us cuddling on the planet Mars
Then when I wake up, ooh, I'm all covered in sex
With eyes that fall somewhere between rubies and stars
Don't look at me, baby, or I'll flex

BRIDGE

(The space) - Go
(The space) - Flow
(The space) - Grow
Do U want 2 go?
(The space) - Where the souls go
(The space) - Where the tears flow
(The space) - Where the love grows
Do U want 2 go?

Bass

Missile and new count in sync?

Closer we get 2 the space

Lie down beneath my shadow with great delight
And your fruit will be sweet 2 me

Dark

So dark, so dark (Dark) {x2}

Inside lookin' out my window
I don't see nothin' but rain
Sun up in the sky just-a-shinin' (Just-a-shinin')
Still I'm lost in my shadow of pain (Mm-hmm)

Like an innocent man that's on death row
I don't understand what made U go
And wanna leave me, baby
Leave me in the dark
Can U tell me, (said) tell me?

U took my sex and my money (Money)
Took all my self-esteem, yes U did
U had the nerve 2 think it was funny (Funny)
I never knew a bitch so mean, yes sir

U absolutely drove a man 2 tears
All I really know is that U sincerely
Wanna hurt me, baby
Oh, yes U do
U wanna hurt me in the dark

Sunshine - Somebody make the sun shine
Dark cloud - Somebody take this dark cloud away

Just as sure as Noah built the ark (That's how sure)
That's how sure I am U broke my heart

How could U, baby, leave me in the dark?
Baby, it's so dark
So dark, so dark (Dark)

Feel like the sun ain't never gonna shine
U left me in the dark
So dark, so dark (Dark)
I don't know, I don't know why we ever had 2 part
Baby, can't see a damn thing out my window, it's so dark
So dark, so dark (Dark)

Sometimes I want 2 curse the ground U walk on
Even when I know that everything U feel, I feel it 2

I wanna curse U, baby
Ooh, U left me in the dark
And now I want 2 curse U, baby (I wanna curse U, baby)
4 leavin' me alone, alone, alone (U left me in the dark)
Oh, yes U did
And now all I wanna say is
In the dark
Ow! U left me {x2}

It's like being on death row (In the dark)
I don't understand why U had 2 go
I don't understand why U (hurt me in the dark)
Don't understand why U (hurt me in the dark)
Don't understand why U hurt me, hurt me, hurt me, hurt me here!
Just leave me (In the dark)
(In the dark)

So dark, so dark (Dark) (In the dark)
So dark, so dark (Dark)
(In the dark)
