Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince

chapt 14 Warfare

August 21, 1993

the Undertaker

Gay(Nona) also became part of another alternative media project, a film called The Undertaker (shot on the Paisley Park soundstage) that featured music interspersed with dramatic footage. Acting in the film along with Gaye was Vanessa Marcil of the daytime soap General Hospital. Using a stripped-down version of the New Power Generation that included only drummer Michael Bland and bassist Sonny Thompson, Prince performed live versions of previously released songs like "Bambi" and "Peach" along with newer numbers like the bluesy "The Ride" and the strong mid-tempo rocker "Dolphin." But while Prince initially planned a full-length feature film, he changed course midway through the project and turned it into a forty-five minute short that focused on music rather than the storyline. A limited edition home video was released in England and Japan in 1995 and became a collector's item.

In the end, projects like The Undertaker were the musical equivalent of busy work, representing nothing more than brief flights of fancy. Bland recalls that the music for the Undertaker was recorded "out of sheer boredom." With little prectical use, these high-cost, low-return endeavors placed a tremendous strain on Prince's finances. After recovering from near-bankruptcy in the late 1980's, Prince had replenished his coffers to some degree, but was now back in trouble.

The Undertaker

This recording was made in a continuous single live-in-the-studio pass in collaboration with NPG drummer Michael Bland and bassist Sonny T Prince originally intended to give this live CD away free with 1,000 copies of Guitar Player magazine in 1994 (uploading an original The Undertaker CD to iTunes, shows the year 1995 as the year the CD was "released"), but he was reportedly barred by Warner Bro. from doing so. Copies were leaked and bootlegged. The songs were guitar-heavy versions of rock and blues numbers, including a cover of The Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" and new recording of "Bambi" (originally from 1979's Prince). The title track was a cover of a song previously given to Mavis Staples, while "The Ride", "Zannalee", and "Dolphin" would all be re-recorded future releases. A video recording of the performance was released in Europe (on VHS and Laserdisc) with small edits throughout the performance and "Dolphin" replaced by the audio track from the official video of the song from The Gold Experience.

Track listing
  1. "The Ride" – 10:54
  2. "Poor Goo" – 4:26
  3. "Honky Tonk Women" – 3:00
  4. "Bambi" – 4:49
  5. "Zannalee (Prelude)" - :44
  6. "The Undertaker" – 9:50
  7. "Dolphin" – 3:40

Paisley Park Studios was opened in 1987 by PRINCE, the legendary musician and entertainer. Paisley Park fame has grown around the world throughout the 80’s and 90’s and continues today.

Since its inception, many of the world’s top artists have used Paisley Park Studios to create chart-topping music, full-length feature films, commercials and music videos.

Paisley Park became the name of Prince's recording studio complex, Paisley Park Studios, when it opened in 1987. Prince had previously used the term "Paisley Park" to refer to two other recording studios - mostly Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, MN, USA, but occasionally also Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (as is the case with Paisley Park itself, which was said to be recorded at "Paisley Park", but was in fact recorded at Sunset Sound). It was also used as the name of his record label, Paisley Park Records, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. from 1985 to 1993. Despite the many uses of the term "Paisley Park", the lyrics state that "Paisley Park is in your heart", indicating that it is a feeling or an ideal rather than one specific place.

Just one quick question to you. I've read somewhere, that before P. bought that place (i mean Paisley Park), there was a factory and I can't remeber what did it call. It was Poisley & Pork or something. Help, please confused
