chapter 5 Majesty

A turning point in the relationship came when Vanity had an affair with Albert Magnoli, enraging Prince. Just a few months before shooting was to begin, Vanity left Purple Rain. She has said she quit over money issues, although other reports indicated she was fired. One knowledgeable source says Vanity was indeed dismissed, and that both her financial demands and the affair with Magnoli were factors.

Prince and his managers agreed that the best course was to find a replacement who could in essence stand in for Vanity. Hundreds of obscure actresses and wannabes answered the call to audition for the vacant role. Prince quickly settled on 22 yr old Patricia Kotero of Santa Monica, California, who had starred in the miniseries Mystic Warriors. The reason for the selection was obvious to everyone: Kotero looked very much like Vanity: Prince inauspiciously dubbed her Apollonia, after a character in the first Godfather film (played by Simonetta Stefanelli) who is killed by a car bomb after marrying Al Pacino's Michael Corleone.

Shortly after recruiting Apollonia, he took her to a Los Angeles club where he had heard that Vanity would be partying. Vanity, who had not yet learned anything about her replacement, was shocked to see a woman dancing nearby who looked like a mirror image of herself.

^ I had always figured the reason for Vanity being dismissed was because of her promiscousness (sp?) at the time so it don't surprise me. I had heard stories she quit but I can believe she was fired.

Prince was a little hypocrite. We know he was sleepign with everything on legs back then.

I never thought they looked alike...Vanity was tall and thin with a cups. Appolonia was shorter and curvier with Ds. Their faces didn't look that much alike either.

The idea of Vanity possibly making a "pass" at the Director for financial gain is very believable to me. But a brief romantic relationship (sexual or not) without Prince having Al Magnoli replaced seems far-fetched.

The idea of Vanity possibly making a "pass" at the Director for financial gain is very believable to me. But a brief romantic relationship (sexual or not) without Prince having Al Magnoli replaced seems far-fetched.

I think it was too far into the game and too close to the movie start for him to fire him. Plus it was his script... I personally think Vanity left on her own though

I LOVED Apollonia back in the day! Still do! She is a beautiful woman.

"What's good for the goose...." obviously means nothing to Prince. Wasn't it said that he had an off-and-on thing with Susan M. during the filming of the movie? And, I thought that she was fired, because you wasn't showing up to rehearsals on time and drug abuse. The affair is news to me.

At what point will people stop saying that Vanity and Apollonia look alike? The only resemblance is the color of their skin and they both have long hair. That's it!!!

It seems like Apollonia had a better body but Vanity had a better face..

Yes, Vanity has serious curves, but Vanity is more toned. Vanity is a serious feline women. Her overall form is perfect to me, Apollonia might have 'more hip' doesn't mean she has a better body

The track was one of the last songs recorded for the album, being cut in late January 1984, along with "My Drawers". The song was composed by Prince and Morris Day, Day provided lead vocals and Jesse Johnson played guitar on the recording. Prince played all the other instruments.

Nah, Vanity is not THAT curvy. Apples has more hips as you said that makes her more curvy. Reminds me of that show "Real Women Have Curves".. It's all good though, we all have our opinion. Ha!
