Hmmm.... I don't know. He was still Prince when he made the O)+> album, and, to me, that signaled the biggest change in sound for him. That album has more in common with Chaos and Disorder and The Gold Experience than Emancipation does. So I don't know if I'd consider the name change a significant change in sound as well.

But if you're talking 80's vs. '90's, I can defend a decent number of his 90's efforts. Not all of it, though. Chaos and Come have a total of 6 solid tracks between them, and Emancipation would have been a tight single CD. Diamonds and Pearls and O)+> are mostly solid and The Gold Eperience... well, The Gold Experience is in my top 5 Prince albums. Crystal Ball doesn't count since it's just a vault release.

In the 90's, Prince was getting fed up with everyone and just started to do his own shit. Unfortunately, some of it was shit. But some of it was tiiiiiiiiiiiight.

When I became a fan was the music I heard and the name 'Prince' wanted to be known by and the music and lyrics at that time was 'off the hinges' he was writing some great ballads, funk and R&B jams. There's not one album of Prince's I do not like but, there are some of his music that I do not put on heavy rotation but, the Era was a great era, imho ...
