'Best of' the songs he gave away What would people have on a CD comprising of the best songs that were written for or recorded by others. Mine is something like this.
Nasty Girl (Vanity 6) I Feel For You (Chaka) 777-9311 (The Time) The Belle Of St Mark (Sheila E) Jungle Love (The Time) High Fashion (The Family) Mutiny The Screams Of Passion Nothing Compares 2 U River Runs Dry Manic Monday (The Bangles) A Love Bizarre (Shelia E) Martikas Kitchen (Martika) If I Love U 2Nite (Mica Paris) Love The Will Be Done (The NPG) Don't Talk To Strangers (Chaka) Ive not heard everything hes given away, but Im constantly amazed at the quality of some of it. The Family album was a really good album, as good as Around the World in A Day IMO.

I haven't heard most of them either. I don't want to buy a cd just because it has one song written by Prince. But it would be cool to have them all on one cd (or however many it would take). If U set your mind free, baby, maybe U'd understand...

The best song he ever gave away was, Baby, You're A Trip, by Jill Jones. Why would Prince give such an obvious classic away to some non-singing harpie like her? This song is too soulful to be fucked up by a white girl with no soul. The Gospel underpinnings are pure Prince, and his bootlet version almost made me cum once.
Then there's Girl O' My Dreams, which is a funky, fun outtake by Prince. Then he does the greatest fuckup in music history and gives the song to a no-talent rapper like (I forgot his name, lol.) All you others say Hell Yea!!

AGREED. Baby, You're a Trip is awesome. I really like FOR LOVE, also. and DESIRE!!! The whole Family CD is great, but that song is a classic IMHO. Does TRAIN count? His version of Train is freakin' incredible. I believe that Mavis Staples recorded it...

Years ago (before I had a PC) I compiled a tape of songs written by Prince (or with him), but performed by Women. I called it 'Girlsongs' (after the ASCAP writers credit he usually used for such material), here's the tracklist;
SIDE 1: Heaven Must Be Near - Ingrid Chavez On The Way Up - Elisa Fiorillo Love...Thy Will Be Done - Martika Standing At The Altar - Margie Cox Baby Go-Go - Nona Hendryx So Strong - Dale Bozzio Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me - Taja Sevelle Sex Shooter - Apollonia 6 101 - Sheena Easton For Love - Jill Jones Sticky Wicked - Chaka Khan If I Love U 2night - Mica Paris Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor SIDE 2: Manic Monday - Bangles The Rhythm Of Your Heart - Mayte Love Song - Madonna A Love Bizarre - Sheila E. U - Paula Abdul Go Go Dancer - Carmen Electra Nasty Girl - Vanity 6 Bliss - Kahoru Kohiruimaki Yo Mister - Patti LaBelle Born 2 B.R.E.E.D. - Monie Love House In Order - Mavis Staples My Tender Heart - Rosie Gaines Hold Me - Jevetta Steele With This Tear - Celine Dion .

Some of my faves:
G-Spot All Day All Night Train Mutiny The Stick Noon Rendezvous (his live version on the Neon Rendezvous rehearsal bootleg,which is gorgeous and nothing like the throwaway version Sheila E did) Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I was going to include Open Book as I love that song, but I wasn't sure whether it was actually released by Martika or not. It would have definitely been a good inclusion on D & P, as would Love,Thy will be done...that would have been an excellent album, remove Jughead and Push and put those two on.

Open Book was released by Jevetta Steele on her 1993 album "Here it is".
Can't believe he gave it away! --------------------------------------------------

"I Hear Your Voice" - Patti Labelle (a VERY original ballad, in my opinion)
"Come Home" - Mavis Staples (captures old school "soul" vibe very well) "Time Waits for No One" - Mavis Staples (love the colorful chords and the subtle yet powerful guitar solo - am I the only one who remembers the video for this song?) "Love... thy will be done" - Martika (a deeper glimpse into Prince's spiritual side) "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"
