What I can remember from the prince.org interview of Wendy & Lisa that wasn't the case at all. Lisa didn't even recognize the title and Wendy said that it was a track Prince wrote right after he parted ways with them.

They parted ways before he wrote it, yet they're on the record? confuse Surely you don't believe that, do you?

He stole their soul before he let them go. cool

Well, it's entirely possible to use existing demo tracks and build something new around them.

If I don't remember the comments by W&L correctly, someone please correct me on this. Could it have been some other track and my memory is just playing tricks on me? Or did Wendy say something like "it was something he / we recorded right before we left"?

Okay, I'll go see what's written about it it on DMSR... well, it lists the song having been recorded before they left. Not that I'd buy the dates listed in that book as concrete proof when the songs really were completed.

Dude, don't believe it Eric Leeds (sax) also talked about the song in an interview.

Lisa probably remembers it as a different title, which a lot of fans have it under, Eric also called it

Eric said Wendy on guitar and vocals Lisa on keys and vocals Sheila E on drums Susannah on vocals BrownMark or Levi on bass Eric of course on sax and a few other there

Whenever he cuts a track with Wendy & Lisa I always like THAT version better, same with this one. Eric Leeds even said that this track was just as much a Wendy & Lisa song as it was Prince's. cool And that's why I STILL don't like when he does Mountains or Power Fantastic, it's just not the same.

especially Power Fantastic because the whole composition is Lisa Coleman (Carousel) Prince just added lyrics

but the released cut is a live recording by Prince & the Revolution:Lisa on piano, Prince on vocals Wendy on guitar BrownMark on bass Bobby Z on drums Matt Fink on keys Atlanta Bliss on trumpet Eric on flute Susan in the engineering room watching the whole thing take place

Wendy got the titles confused. She thought the person was asking about "In This Bed I Scream" and not "In A Large Room With No Light."

"a dense & busy jazz fusion piece, featured live playing by most of the Revolution & drumming by Sheila E." - Susan Rogers

In A Large Room With No Light
Eric Leeds' sax starts off this busy,
animated rock number with jazz overtones.
The song has a lively spontaneous feel,
recorded with the expanded Revolution.
The music contradicts the serious lyrics,
which concern the harshness of life and feelings of being lost.
Prince compares life to "looking for a penny in a large room with no light".
Originally considered for the 19 track,
2-LP Dream Factory, the song was later dropped.

Lana drew a picture in school 2day
One that made her mother cry
A picture of a woman with a drink in her hand

Standing by a child with no eyes
Washington reaction based upon revenge
Babies blown 2 kingdom come

Damn the logic
Cartoon characters look better when they're on the run
Danny dropped the dime on his girlfriend

He said he didn't wanna go 2 jail alone
The seed lives in the same mind

With the thought that says we all should be stoned
And people lookin' 4 angels in the sky
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.co...77662.html ]
Whenever they're broken-hearted
Love is grown, seeds are sown
A fire don't burn unless it's started
Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right
Everytime U wake up there's a little motherfucker
Talkin' big stuff in your face (Are U happy?)
U only get the kind of people that open their mouth
just 2 swap feet
Welcome 2 the rat race
Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
That aren't right

Oh, if U could just pass your history class
Maybe life would be alright
Until then U'll be lookin' 4 a penny

In a large room with no light
Yeah!
Life

Never listened much to the original. I liked it but it just never captured my attention too much. The 2009 version did, but that could be due to a lot of reasons.

I really dont think it makes sense to compare the two versions though. If the original players were to have gotten together and rerecorded it in 2009 it wouldn't compare to the creativity and spontaneousness of the original either. That original moment can't be repeated. Its unique. Which is why I prefer when Prince doesn't try to reproduce the original but recreates the song with different elements that highlight the strenghts of who he's playing with.

Change it one more time..

It's "In A Large Room With No Light" (unless you buy the claims that the title was originally even longer than that).

The bootleg I originally heard it from, it was called, "Welcome 2 the Rat Race."

FWIW, I like the original.

I have been literally addicted to this song since late last night till now! I don't what it is about it! smile I think many of us here on the "org" have the same binges around the same time; because lo and behold you post a thread about this song! Haha

I heard the 2009 version and it's classic, I love that he nailed the lyrics on the head, and the arrangement is beautiful. (Even as he took some out...Especially the "muthafucka" line. It sounds crystal clear, and has everything in the song that made me love it in the first place. I love what he did with his guitar, it makes the song even more amazing! However, I would have to go with the 1986 version.

The 1986 version has more edge, and I don't know it's just remarkable. I love that fact that the one released in 2009, is much longer with details of the piano, guitar, drums, just longer details which makes it more joyful. This song just has no ending!

I can't really choose the more I think about it...They are both great! BUT Back to 1986! 2009 is impeccable too! I LOVE that guitar singing the way it does! It's so powerful! La, la, la, la la, la, la, la!!! Haha

Recorded May 4th 1986 at Sunset Sound.

"It was a great song, quite unlike anything Prince had ever done. The song was very much Wendy & Lisa's too. They had a lot to do with that song. I really felt we were part of something special on that one. A unique song." Eric Leeds Uptown's The Vault

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
