No Light In A Large Room: 1986 vs. 2009

Which one do u like better?

I know I'm gonna b flamed 4 that but I prefer the 2009 version: it's smoother and more elegant and sophisticated than the original. I still love the original, though, it was one of my fave outtakes for years, but it sounds a bit... clumsy compared to its 2009 conterpart.

Am I the only one to like the 2009 version better?

The original is more aggressive [which I miss in Prince's music], so I like it more than the newer one overall. But I do the like ending of the newer version better then the original....

الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Honestly for my heart the 1986 version is a lot better of the 2009 remake.

But the 2009 remake is not that bad.

Simply it sounds a little too minimalistic and bare having in mind the original and somewhat "out-of-time" if you can understand what I mean.

You know you've got something wrong with the title.

It's "In A Large Room With No Light" (unless you buy the claims that the title was originally even longer than that).

I like both versions. It was nice to see Prince realizing he had written such a good piece of music years ago and revisiting it later on.

Love both versions. 1986 version beats 2009 by a whisker though.

The problem with the new version is: there's no edginess!

The frenetic beat is, at least a little bit. Not a big fan of the track anyway.

Pulling this out was great, and it was a suitable version. Of course the original is better, but that it got a late airing like this at all was really cool. Why no officially released version though? Streams etc are BS.

Is this even a REAL question?? Tell me this is an extremely early April Fools joke! There is only ONE version, which is the 1986 one. In my mind, nothing else exists. For damn sure not that atrocity he called a jam he released to a website that wasn't his own in 2009! Ugh.

This thread's a fail for even asking! disbelief

Original has the same kind of beat and sound as "Play in the Sunshine". Another example of him of him repeating a similar layer or element in a completely different song.

lol

That sound is original it's pushing sounds and styles. It almost reminds me of the later sounds that the producer of some of Amerie & Beyonce's sound heard on Crazy In Love(?) & 1 Thing(?)

In A Large Room With No Lights has a similar frantic feel like Life Can Be So Nice and I love both as IS. that Jazzy remix is cool only that Prince 'pays' homage' to those days. But the remix does nothing for me

I think it is the same beat as the studio version of "Play in the Sunshine" with a different reverb and edit. Were they recorded the same week, or day?

The only thing "cool" about the 2009 version is the fact that he acknowledged it exists. That's it! He did to this song what he does to a lot of his jams on stage, which is turn them into jazz-lite lounge numbers. He completely castrated it. I don't see why he didn't just release the original, unedited of course.

Damn u're right, I think it was called like that on the old boots and it remained stuck this way in my mind despite me being aware of the real title...

So, what boot has the best quality of the 1986 version? I don't think I have the old version, and I have almost everything!

Edited to add: I'm not asking where to get said bootleg. I am quite capable of finding what I want. I just don't know what I'm looking for.

Maaaaan, the 2009 version is jamming. I've been listening to it a lot lately.

Listen closely, it's not just a live rehearsal, he went back and overdubbed BG vocals etc.

For all those wishing for a Crystal Ball II etc, this is like a little tiny bit of that.

It's missing the "edginess" of the original (read: reverb), but so what?

He pulled a (highly-circulated) song out of the vault, and re-recorded the entire thing.

Sure, it's not a mastered, cleaned up version of the original, but that's likely not even possible at this point.

The live version's played in 2009 were decent but the released 2009 version has no umph at all. The la la la la sounds corny. Listen to the end of the 1986 version, it is builds and blows up. The song is so unique, it needs to be released in all its original 1986 glory.

I listen to both versions back to back and I just think that the 2009 version is more polished but they are both equally good. cool cool cool

Whenever he cuts a track with Wendy & Lisa I always like THAT version better, same with this one. Eric Leeds even said that this track was just as much a Wendy & Lisa song as it was Prince's. cool And that's why I STILL don't like when he does Mountains or Power Fantastic, it's just not the same.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

What I can remember from the prince.org interview of Wendy & Lisa that wasn't the case at all. Lisa didn't even recognize the title and Wendy said that it was a track Prince wrote right after he parted ways with them.

They parted ways before he wrote it, yet they're on the record? confuse Surely you don't believe that, do you?
