Is Prince a hipster?

I'm actually sure of the definition but Hipsters are like people who like indie music and hate commercial stuff right?

Prince is sort of independent and supports things that aren't mainstream but does that make him one?

You ain't right.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

From CityPages.com

http://blogs.citypages.co..._state.php

Minnesota named 'Most Hipster State in the U.S.'

It's something that doesn't seem like it can be quantified, but through rigorous research and controlled study BuzzFeed has found a way. In a recent piece, the website named Minnesota the Most Hipster State in the U.S., shockingly beating out New York (Williamsburg!) and Oregon (Portland!).

Somewhere in a northeast Minneapolis dive bar, a guy in flannel drinking a PBR Tallboy is crying tears of joy, and he's not sure why.

So how did we capture the number one spot? Apparently Minnesota "leads the nation in searches for the term 'hipster.'" BuzzFeed further asserts that while Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood is teeming with hipsters, it is the Minnesota hipster aesthetic that they are trying to imitate. Fascinating!

The article goes on to explain that Minnesota's obsessive bike culture, thriving music scene/legacy, and our love of lumberjack chic are top reasons why we're the biggest hipster state. However, it's a little dubious to call out our abundant farmers' markets (produce is a hipster thing?) and our thriving theater scene (wealthy people at the Guthrie are hipsters?) as examples of our hipster-ness.

But we definitely can't argue with Exhibit J: Juno.

I always thought hipsters were those who wanted to be hip, and jumped on the bandwagon of the next big thing. They seem like they're not mainstream because they're doing an extreme version of the new hot before it has reached everyone else. If you listen to Cool Kids and James Blake, are skate boarding and name dropping hot up and coming artists, you're a hipster.

Oh no you're right and they add to it by bragging about it. Like "aw do you need a brownie?" You should sign up on TUMBLR, there's like a bunch of hipsters on there lmao

OFWGKTA, Jamie Woon, James Blake, The Weeknd etc...

if you wanna be a hipster you have to listen to these, hehe. Of course I'm not saying they're bad or anything. I found Tylers video of hanging himself pretty interesting, and he sounds a bit like many other underground cats that never made it to the mainstream. For those not familiar with the underground, he is a breath of fresh air. What I like most about these cats are not their music, but the fact that they are changing the trend. Trends need to change every now and then If I'm going to be able to listen to the radio.

Exactly! I just bought his Goblin and Bastard albums yesterday. He's pretty legit.

Their personality also turned me on to them.

Prince is the exact opposite of a hipster, whenever he talks about other artists, he's usually bandwagon jumping (Janelle Mon-whatever) or completely behind the times (Amy Skagghouse, Adele, etc).

-Well yeah cause Prince in some hip hugging jeans is my take on this new 'hipster' term. biggrin

-The term 'Hipster' just doesn't "sound" too good to me.

-"I'm a 'hipster" doesn't roll off my tongue too well.

-Kind of sounds like that term 'wangster' for 'gangster'. lol
