Listening 2 it now. It's quite impressive that Kate would change the song SO MUCH after Prince added his parts! I think she even rerecorded the vocals (at least parts of them), and she also suppressed some parts. I love this version too, but I wouldn't say I love it more than the album version, both are quite interesting approaches. I'd have loved Kate to include this version on Director's Cut, though.
I'd love 2 hear the full Prince version which, according 2 Michael Koppelman, was pure crap . A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

To each their own, but Cameo, Brothers Johnson and Gary Shider represented their trademark funk in their own right pre-Minneapolis area. Cameo had it's own evolution of sound when they flipped the script from a bigband and horn-driven funk to stripped down synth funk, and were successful with a series of albums and singles within the funk community and eventually to a wider demographic. During the Brothers Johnson days, Louis Johnson had build a steady reputation with his trademark bass style (iron thumbs, thunder thumbs, etc) and was hired for it on numerous of recording sessions. All without the help of any other artist.

Me'Shell is a major artist but she wasn't influencial, she's basically just doing something wonderful in a world that doesn't care. The influencial person in the 90's Afro-American music was Dr. Dre, who influenced his peers as musc as Prince in the 80's and George, Sly and James earlier. Everything sounded like Snoop's What's My Name after 1993! A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

I am not that familiar with Me'shells music. But judged on what i have seen of her she is more like an eclectic singer-songwriter, that uses funk, among soul, R&B and pop-elements in her music.
