Is Prince the greatest ever? Simple question.
In your opinion, is Prince, overall, the greatest ever?
And why?
If not, who is? | |

Yes. Prince is the greatest Prince ever.
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

The greatest what...? | |

Yes.
Because I think he is the only one that has it all. He is a great vocalist, great songwriter, great musician, great performer, a pioneer in music and is one of the very few artists who has released more than 10 amazing and almost perfect albums and a whole bunch of other gems. Plus he wrote a lot of amazing songs that are not even released.
And while there are other artists that may outshine him in one or two of those fields, he is imo the best alrounder and with that, imo, the greatest of all time. You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Musician, (the whole scope), songwriter, performer....etc

OK, do you mean nowadays, in the 20th century, in ALL past centuries...?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
We should probably keep it to the 20th century.

Yes.
Because Prince is the best.

Yes.
Because before I was a Prince fan, I was a rap fan and I never heard any music that sounded like his music. So I always thought he was the greatest ever. I was a casual MJ also, but once I found out about Prince, I was done with MJ. I never seen anyone look the way did. I never seen a artist play so many instruments. Usually, I'll scan through a artist discography, and pick some songs I like, but with Prince, I liked mostly all of his album.
It was his performance that did it for me. He's the greatest performer in my book.

P being as prolific as he is and the fact that a lot of what I've heard I appreciate and like. I believe he is the greatst musician and entertainer ... EVER !!! (in my humble opinion) ... Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

That makes him the greatest??
And how are the songs amazing if they were never release?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It means he had a lot of great songs to choose from and had to leave a lot of great stuff out. Most other artists struggle to fill up even an album with their material that they'd consider strong enough.

Isn't it kind of biased asking that question at a Prince fan/fam club? I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me. Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots. Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol. Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol. Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

All those songs together show how creative he is, imo. And I was talking about officially released. [Edited 8/17/11 13:12pm] You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

What? You were talking about non-released officially released songs?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Edit: No, that did make sense! I was talking about songs that were never officially released. But I have to admit I could have written that down a lot better...
In other words, they are not released officially. [Edited 8/17/11 13:19pm] You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

You know everyone is gonna say yes, right?

Of course.
Edit: No, that did make sense! I was talking about songs that were never officially released. But I have to admit I could have written that down a lot better...

We betta... Otherwise he'd have a hard time to beat Bach or Mozart...
In the 20th century I'd say he's the best all-in-one artist.
If we take any of his skills separately, there are loads of candidates better than him (especially in the jazz department), but I think I can't name anybody else who can do so many things with such proficiency.

Of course he isn't. There isn't a 'best' - there's your favourites, and there's legends, but no one does everything. Prince does what he does and that's great - isn't that enough.

Prince ruled the world in 1980 to 1988,
Back then he was the "greatest".
Creating so much brilliant music, it should be impossible for one man,
Writing, producing, playing and singing so much..... = Prince 4Ever.

well, he makes the rules then breaks them

Prince is the greatest at being himself...as he said: "if you can describe it then it ain't funky"
I think he is (highly subjective here) because of the scope of his art:
funk rock jazz ballads acoustics
even reggae
he sings, he is a musician...the majority of what we've heard he has produced on his own
last but not least, he is totally independent, not relying on major record labels but doing his own thang
