Hey Warners a BIG marketing message Prince loses millions to the bootleg market by not officially making massive amounts of material that was available in the past. I have 2 words for the solution to Prince - Neil Young - Give Prince the same archival treatment you granted Neil Young regarding special reissues- Surely Prince is as important an artist as Neil Young? I love Neil Young, but wouldn't you say Prince is a MUCH bigger ICON if not on the same level as Neil? There is so much Warners could be doing and they are taking baby steps- They need to really blow it out, as they did with Neil- which has been financially VERY profitable for both Neil and Warners. Prince, The first 10 albums are the musical talisman and fabric of how most of us got aboard this purple ride - I hope those albums get the sun they deserve to shine in. The vinyl re-issues are a real nice start- But I know many people would love to see box sets, special editions, limited editions, etc. . With the state of the world today- Time is pretty precious these days- Waiting too long, to me, seems unwise. Let's knock on wood and hope Somebody making decisions at Warners reads this and gets a NEW BALL rolling...
I can already see a limited version of the box that features real gold in the packaging. Now that would be trill!
A memory stick with all the music videos/promo clips with of course, a symbol-shaped housing- All in high quality, remastered audio/video.
I could do this for days... I'll stop, for now...

i'm sure the suits at Warners never thought of that before and all those ideas are new to them

Two big differences: Neil is still signed to Warner, and he is heavily involved in the preperation of the archival sets. Prince isn't and wouldn't bother.

Hi Warner Brothers! | |

Neil took years to put this box set out, he was talking about doing it back in the mid 90s and it wasn't until Blu Ray and his brain aneurysm that he decided to prioritize the archives. There was also the Buffalo Springfield box set he took part in. He was completely sold on what Blu Ray can do that he's put out his new recordings on it as well. Pink Floyd are doing the same thing with the upcoming box sets.
I was kind of surprised the Mynah Birds material didn't make it on his box set, but thankfully it did wind up out for people to hear. Wonder who leaked it though... Neil or a Motown Records insider.
Joni knows Neil and Prince... would be a good tour.

the difference is Neil Young gives a fuck about his fans and wants to release all that stuff. Prince doesn't on both accounts. She Believed in Fairytales and Princes, He Believed the voices coming from his stereo

Since you and others seem to be in the know- Who made the decision to reissue "Controversy on vinyl with the suggestive poster included?

Where u been dude? it's been discussed 1000 times.
The recent vinyl remasters were remasters of the original masters, not of the pre-masters final tapes, and they were done by WB on vinyl only because they knew Prince would make a hell of their life if they'd do 'em on CD (this comes from an insider at WB). WB wanna stay outta trouble because they know Prince can be a pain in their ass and besides, without Prince they couldn't remaster the original tape (which they don't have) nor include any outtake or live tracks (which they don't have either) and I guess they consider that without extra, previously unreleased material, the rereleases wouldn't be THAT appealing... It's also possible that they hope to make a new deal with Prince when he gets the rights back, and that could be why they don't push him too far, just like when they asked him to approve the Ultimate compilation tracklist and took his opinion into account when he said wanted to change it.
So in the end... nothing's going to happen before P regains the rights to his WB albums. Period. [Edited 8/23/11 23:21pm] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Am I the only one that fears that they will never be remastered due to it being against his religion? Same reason he changed the (live) lyrics to Peach, DMSR, Let's Go Crazy, etc.
Collecting royalties on past sins might not be a big deal, but collecting royalties on a new "remastered" version might go against whatever nonsense he believes in these days.
Everything else he does seems to be motivated by money -- so one can hope that he'll eventually work with Warner on remasters.
Too bad that Warner didn't include that in getting out of his contract with Warner:
"Hey Prince, just give us a shitty album. Call it 'Chaos' or 'Disorder.' You choose. You can even put a fucking country song on the album. Also, since you don't write number one songs anymore, we want 'TMBGITW' to be on 'The Gold Experience.' Hell, you can even count 'The Black Album' as part of the contract if you allow us to release that. We'll even let you release a shitty album in the UK under the name Tora Tora if you do these things. Oh, and we want to remaster almost every single one of your records with us. That goes for The Time, Sheila E. etc, and every artist on the Paisley Park label worth remastering." (Sorry TC Ellis, you're sol.)
What a bunch of nonsense.
Is there another artist that is less concerned with their legacy than Prince? I could give a fuck about extra material. I just want what has been available for decades to finally sound as good as it is supposed to. Or at least before I start going deaf from playing those songs at such a high level that when a song comes on from "The Gold Experience," I don't rush to turn it down because it hurts.

Prince said he would release them a few months ago, so religion shouldn't be an obstacle. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

What does this actually mean? I think suomyona is asking original material with better sounds. Could Prince truly provide that?

What happened to his contract has been well-documented:

I think the problem is that he is so concerned about people covering his tracks and seeing them being played on the internet that he recently seems to be (from interviews) less concerned with the affairs of his past. Although that interview with Peach and Black shed some light on what he thought about the sound of his remasters...so he does understand where we are coming from for sure.
I just hope he takes some time off after the tour...sort some nice package out and take a well deserved break in the meantime. Counter-act all these bootlegs coming out and put some effort into sorting out his music....and make them available for purchase. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Firstly, If you're referring to Exodus then get your facts straight as WB had nothing to do with that.
Secondly just because you don't like his 93 - 96 material doesn't make it shitty, there are alot of people who like that material and still listen to it regularly, (those that like The Dawn 4.0) so why don't you go back to your mama's basement and listen to your vinyl copy of Sign Of The Times over and over.

WB could have easily sued Prince over those "Tora Tora" shenanigans.
FYI: WB were gonna release Exodus in the USA, but on the condition that Prince stopped badmouthing them. Which seemed to go well -- and then there's another big interview with Prince bitching about WB, and Exodus got shelved. [Edited 8/24/11 15:11pm] © Bart Van Hemelen
