The question of The Question of U Despite being a one verse/chorus song it is one of Prince's finest lyrical moments?
I can't sing, but I got soul

I love this song, and the live version especially, with the long guitar solo, absolutely stunning.

I agree. The tune is beautiful and the lyrics are intriguing. According to Per Nilsen (The Vault) the U is Prince himself and the song is about his doubts and problems in the music biz.

I think this song is about God. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

I never looked at it from that perspective. If so, it sorta spoiles it for me. But if U analyze lyrics too much, you take the fun out of it. The great thing about a good piece of art is that everybody can make up their own mind about it.

Yes, I agree with you. I just can't avoid reading criticism of Prince's (and all my favourite musicians') music and lyrics.
But the most important thing is to make your own interpretation. There's no "official" reading of Prince's lyrics. Even if Prince said that one song is about this and that, it doesn´t really matter; what matters is the listener's interpretation and reconstruction of the lyrics, and how he/she incorporates them into his/her experience.

my interpretation was always that it was directed at the critics. "shall I become naked, no image at all?"
