I hate to say, but there is too much Prince's music too hard to get. Therefore I can't create any relation to such material. Provocative name is not a promise of quality.
Only hard to get via legitimate means.
Easy to get from "other" sources....
Out of print material should be considered fair game for file sharing. How else are new fans supposed to hear it?
Needless to say, but I'm too old for digging shit. Anyhow, I completely agree that there should be a legitimate source for downloading. CD's and DVDs are dying industry and local stores are loaded by mainstream.
I'm an old fan of Prince but lost my interest during the '90s. After these many years and his recent European tour I started to listen to his music again very keen to find out what has become of him? How has he come to this?
Prince has not made us that easy to conceive.

Hi, I know not many orgers here like the NPG orchestra album "Kamasutra", but I think it has its moments. Recently I find myself listening to "Kamasutra/Eternal Embrace" quite often. What do you think about this one or the other tracks?

The funny thing is since a lot of the tracks are musically completely different from each other, it's a bit of a blanket statement to say the album completely sucks.
Agreed, smoothcriminal's description is more accurate than "it sucks". But "it sucks" isn't completely inaccurate...
Although Smooth's description is very accurate and insightful, i have to disagree with you (Thunderfunk) considering the whole accuracy thing. "It sucks" holds the edge here, as it sums up the same things in just two words!

One reason is that most Prince fans are uneducated people who run away as soon as music isn't "radio-friendly". Look at how they reacted to N.E.W.S.
Another reason is that those of us who have a knowledge of contemporary and experimental music realized, when listening to Kamasutra, that Prince DOES NOT have such a knowledge, and therefore released an experiment which probably sounded innovative to him while it was actually terribly corny and clumsy.
Now I'm glad he did it, it was very daring for him to release this and back then, when I didn't know all the music I now know, I really enjoyed listening to it. I think Prince should have listened to what others did in that genre before jumping into it, but whatsoever, I wish he would release more daring stuff like that or his (far superior) other instrumental albums. |

I don't think Kamasutra was supposed to be experimimental. It was supposed to be somewhat orchestral in parts and other parts were like pop intrumentals. It varies in musical style quite greatly outside of everything being an instrumental, but seems fairly musically traditional throughout. |

They don't like it because it sucks. Oh, and N.E.W.S. also sucks.

It was simply arrogance. "Look at me I'm a real composer!" It's the kind of shit the likes of Wendy & Lisa would have mocked him for. © Bart Van Hemelen

Can you please write an essay about why it sucks, comparing it to similar works by other musicians, putting it in the context of Afro-American music in 2003, and music in general in the early 2000's, and explaining exactly what makes it a poor album. Minimum 500 words. Thanks

Then again, there are Prince fans who studied music for years, love N.E.W.S and recognize Kamasutra for the crap it is. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

If this was his wedding music, it is not a shock that their marriage was doomed. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. That's my situation even though i'm not a musician proper (I used to be a singer but I never really studied music except for singing technics). I think N.E.W.S is an absolute masterpiece but I can hardly listen to Kamasutra anymore. Incidentally, I think Cutz is probably one of the best things on it. People have the right to say they don't like N.E.W.S. in terms of personnal taste, but to say it sucks is really pure nonsense: the level of musicianship and the narrative strength are astonishing, particularly when you think it was semi-improvisation recorded in one take! |
