Why so less love for "Kamasutra"?

Hi, I know not many orgers here like the NPG orchestra album "Kamasutra", but I think it has its moments. Recently I find myself listening to "Kamasutra/Eternal Embrace" quite often. What do you think about this one or the other tracks?

There were times when I really enjoyed this album, and I think I could still enjoy it if I gave it another listen because I really like some of the tracks but, all in all, it is very repetitive and lacks real instruments. I mean, it could´ve been much better if he had used Claire Fisher´s help but just Prince on synthesizers? Meh.

Not really bad though. I´d rather see Prince whatever he wants to release and be able to buy albums like this than Prince not being able to release stuff like this.

Hi...nice to see a fellow 'Ben' on here too.

I think the main issue is the distribution, it wasn't widely distributed, it was only part of the Crystal Ball set via mail order I believe, other versions of CB did not include it.

It is pretty nice, I agree but it hardly gets referenced or mentioned as an album which is strange. Similar issue with The Truth too, although that was more widely distributed (was part of the CB set).

I hate to say, but there is too much Prince's music too hard to get. Therefore I can't create any relation to such material. Provocative name is not a promise of quality.

Prince is probably thanking his lucky stars that mess didn't have wider distribution.

The music isn't "hard to get." It's just bad.

It's.................ok. I can't remember the last time I played it to be honest.

Not a great listen but something that's different that's for sure.

I just came across it on my iTunes at work earlier today (when I was looking for something else). I slid right on by. lol

Before CB, the album was sold on cassette for $25 on 1-800-NEW-FUNK. I was so pissed when I paid $25 for that crap. I then had to pay $50 for the CB set.

Oh, and the music sucked also. lol

I got it as a digital download from NPGMC...and needed to move it to listen to the whole thing. Which I've only done once. lol

Interesting point, what it would sound like with Clare Fischers input. But I thought he put orchestration on the tracks? I thought the album's credits said so

It was available seperately, as Cassette only I believe.

It gets mentioned less because it is credited to NPG Orchestra.

If we can't agree on whether or not Newpower Soul is a Prince album (credited to NPG but Prince sings lead and his picture is on the cover) then we'll never get a consensus that this is a Prince album... biggrin

Yes, I have the cassette version but I believe it was bundled as a CD for those who bought the set via NewFunk.

Yes, it came with NF copies of Crystal Ball.

Only hard to get via legitimate means.

Easy to get from "other" sources....

Out of print material should be considered fair game for file sharing. How else are new fans supposed to hear it?

Prince could easily have his own online download store offering digital versions of anything that's no longer in stores. He doesn't. His loss.

Before I'm attacked, I bought it. I bought the cassette and I bought the mail order Crystal Ball. Both directly from 1-800-NEW-FUNK. But, If I was a new fan, I would feel no guilt snatching a torrent.

You are correct. It was the 5th CD in the mail order Crystal Ball.

As a whole the album is interesting (to say the least), but it's virtually unlistenable and a mess of random ideas. I'm listening to it right now. It has no direction at all and is boring.

There are about 2 or three really good tracks on there. I mean really cool tracks. The others are a bit too vague or flowery for me.

The funny thing is since a lot of the tracks are musically completely different from each other, it's a bit of a blanket statement to say the album completely sucks.

the scissors sample is also used in Bob George.

Agreed, smoothcriminal's description is more accurate than "it sucks". But "it sucks" isn't completely inaccurate... biggrin
