I truly can't stand this record. My first reaction was that I liked the music but the lyrics kinda scared me. Prince was always a religious man but never preached hell and damnation like on this one. Worst thing of all was that it felt like he actually meant it. This was not the Prince I liked, but a religious fundamentalist.
My second reaction is that I don't even like the music. It's as bombastic and self-righteous as the lyrics. Fake jazzrock, that's what it is. priest

It's in his bottom ten, with NEWS, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, Come, Planet Earth and others.

Yeah! More than any other. But that's exactly what I like about Prince. He does something to you whether you like it or not! You can't feel nothing. I guess it will always be like that. I prefer this to artists whose albums all sound the same, like Lenny Kravitz or JJ Cale.

Definitely Me! wave I can't dismiss that album! It's a sincere gem, and despite the "Jehovah Witnesses" overtones; the production, is crystal perfect. It's actually the first album I listened to as a whole from Prince from start to finish! I am yet amazed, at how he arranged it like this. It was like a story containing all the necessary components in making it excellent! It's one impeccable album! I recently told my girlfriend; because she asked. "Should I listen to 'The Rainbow Children?...Is it a good album"

I told her "Yes, if you can overlook the BOLD Jehovah Witnesses overtones, and appreciate the aspects of the productions infused with jazz (Which she loves) I think you will enjoy it...Even if it might take time to grow on you, it's a masterpiece!

She was like "A MASTER PIECE???.,..That might be going too far."

BUT NOPE! I reside at my stand, I really think it is a masterpiece EVEN with the Darth Vadar voice...lol..I actually like that about it, It is a perfect narration, his own voice would have sounded too personal..I don't know? It's awesome though! lol

Indeed. This album hasn't any flaws, in my opinion. With time, it may even climb into my Top 5. Tomorrow I'll open The Rainbow Children poll! We'll have a good time ranking the songs of this masterpiece!

Hecks Yeah! smile I await the results from the poll! I have to say my favorite song has to be "The Sensual Everafter AND Muse 2 The Pharaoh, Mellow, and ahh I can't really choose. LOL.

It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Not me. It's kinda hard to listen to imo. I've only gotten through the whole thing twice & I rarely remember the songs on it after I listen to it. I honestly think 'Lotusflow3r' is way better. "Boom" alone is almost better than everything on TRC [there are a few good tracks on TRC].

الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Not me, i place it among his worst 5 - 7 albums.

And not only for the useless, waaaay tooooo slowwww 'darth vader voice' and the annoying dogmatic lyrics, but also for the music itself.

I agree, he is experimenting again after the 'plastic years' of Emancipation, NPS and Rave, but not in a good way IMO: the music owes a lot to seventies jazz-rock / fusion, a type of music that seems to come more from the head then from the heart, and that usually bores me to death.

Next to that he isnt convincing me with his delivery of the material, both lyric- and musicwise, it appears to me as if his soul isnt into it... its a rather cold / dark album to me.

Me. But I must admit that this place kinda ruined the experience for me... lol
I never pay attention to lyrics (I can't sing along with most of my favorite Prince songs lol ) and as I'm not a native English speaker I have no problem just completely ignoring lyrics as they're not as intrusive to me as words in my mother tongue. So when I came here and first read about what dark lyrics the album had I was like: "what are they talking about?" omg

I paid attention to the lyrics the next time I listened the album, and I can't put myself past the paranoid nonsense he's talking about everytime I listen to it ever since... disbelief It still has a spot in my top 10, but it did drop some 3-4 places. Thanks a lot y'all... lol
You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Y do ppl hate this album so much? I think its among his best. Then again, I don't have a worst Prince album.

I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

I have TRC in my top 10 'all albums'. I am a big Prince fan and my total music collection is about 75% funk/R&B/soul and the rest eclectic, e.g., the albums in my top 10 include things like Bowie's Ziggy album.
