I was amazed to find out that the first four tracks on the parade album..prince put down the drums in one take ...and not only was it one take...it was the first take....is there no end to this Guy's ability....?

Yes is impressive but bear in mind this doesn't mean he didn't rehearse it for hours before they actually pressed record!

Why wouldn't a good drummer be able to play 9 minutes of fairly simple drum parts in one take?...

I know perfectly well that this is rather rarely done in the world of rock/pop record making, but I mean, he is an OK drummer and these particular parts are not difficult.

It isn't that the drum parts were difficult. It's that Prince was known to lay down his drum tracks first - which means he already had those four songs mapped out in his head. That is what's impressive.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

OK, that's true.

Right, plus it was music he'd written and thus knew intimately.

I wouldn't say that playing four songs you wrote in one take by yourself on the drums is "amazing" but I would say it was definitely cool. I don't know anyone in the big-time pop world in the 80s who would have taken such a chance. It gave the album its unique live sound. Christopher Tracy's Parade/New Position/I Wonder U/Under the Cherry Moon is quite a circus ride.

Musicians with long experience in live and studio music knows for how long they are supposed to play each part. And most of these good musicians knows also how to memorise and visualise the other instruments while they play. It's called experience. But prince is both good at composing, and putting small breaks and details that suits the rest of the instrumentation better than most bands would do together. That is impressive. It is also possible to cut and paste even with analog tapes. It's been done for many decades. But since Prince has been doing this for so long, and to me is a genuis at what he's doing, I don't think he had any problem recording this. The way he puts together instrumentation is the most interresting I've heard in any "pop" record, and underground as well. Especially how he is mixing guitar, bass, drums, drum machine and synth.

But at the end of the day, yes this is rarely done. Even pretty good drummers are playing the same shit atleast 5 times before they choose the best take.

Adorecream

Its all true, and you can tell, especially with the first three songs, they all kind of segue into each other. Prince is awesome drummer and you can hear this here. I agree with Blackbob, it is genius.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
