Has Prince always been a closet conservative? People say how much Prince has changed since he became a JW but I suspect that he has always been a conservative at heart. The rebel of the Dirty Mind -1999 years was simply him putting on an act to stir up attention, which he has admitted in interviews ("a lot of bike-riding nude", I believe were his words).
Anybody else feeling this and if yes, does it affect your opinion of him?

I think there isn't such a difference between pre JW Prince and after. In my opinion, some fans make the difference bigger because of their discontent with Prince's new beliefs. This is not to say Prince hasn't evolved in a conservative sense, I only mean the change isn't that radical. Religion has always been there, although not expressed in the same way, and one can say the same about sex.

He came form the heartland, a quiet child in hi-school to become the punk funker of lascivious rebellion and peace. "Bullshit"-Camille "Climb in my fur."

He's always been a religious nutter, so yeah.
You see his freedom mantras mainly pertained to himself, not anyone else.

"Whoever said that elephants (republicans/ conservative) are stronger than mules (democratics/ liberals)".....
lyrics from "Paisley Park" (song),

The man isn't informed enough to be considered liberal OR conservative.
For better or for worse.

He may get old and "conservative" but in the past, he definitely has been more "liberal" as far as US politics go....there's just no doubt there.

He's always been conservative. ALWAYS.

not this again.
I think, like a great deal of us, Prince thinks liberally on certain issues and conservatively on others.
Sometimes things, or people, or events, happen to us that makes us change to a different way of thinking one way or the other. |

It all depends on how you look at it. Yes, he´s pretty conservative these days, but he was conservative in the 1980s ( "Free", the Ronald Reagan quote, "America", that MTV interview in 1986 and he was still conservative in the 1990s, too. I remember how pissed he was at some awards show when some group did something with the American flag that he didn´t like....I think this incident happened during the Gold Experience era. He was and still is very patriotic. Then again, years later he became very skeptical of the USA and its foreign and domestic politics and its history, and dabbled in conspiracy theories. And wrote lyrics like Mr.Man and Cinnamon Girl...clearly a different direction than what most of his fans were used to from Prince. I don´t take his political ramblings too seriously but I like where he is these days. But I don´t like most of his views. He´s smart but definitely not an intellectual. But his heart seems to be in the right place...he´s still very much a peace loving person, and I like that.
I could go on and on but I got to go and do some grocery shopping. So, in a nutshell, YES. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Defending the Purple One, Prince has never been fully liberal or conservative. I think he has his own mind on who he thinks is good or bad. Not necessarily a person whose thoughts I would openly AGREE with but I doubt he's a closet conservative.

Just because he liked Reagan doesn't make him a conservative. Neil Young liked Reagan too, but wanted Bush impeached.
Artists traditionally are Democrats because the Republicans are the ones who cut arts-related programming. The only reason he'd vote for a Republican is because they favor the wealthy when it comes to tax cuts.

^ I don't know if ALL artists are one particular party. I don't get why music and politics are mixed in together sometimes. I'm kinda like Billy Joel. If you're a musician, I don't think no one would wanna know who you voted for or how you should vote for. Plus Prince is a Jehovah's Witness nowadays so I don't count on him to be that open about politics as he used to.

Why do we care about what the least educated people (celebrities) think about politics? We should be googling what the top scholars think!

There's merit to what you say, but I think artists and politics have been linked since the dawn of time. Artists have always been the voice of the people. Artists have always expressed what the general public was feeling through their own words, visuals, or whatever. Remember WAY back in the day when painters were akin to journalists, etc.
Personally? I think it can go either way. Some people can truly tune out of the world at large, tap into their introspective self, and mine that for emotional gold. However, I suspect most artists feel obliged to speak NOW because the times are so dire. If anything, an artist is a beacon of social truth. A lot of people (not you) try to divorce civil liberties from the political stage, but civil liberties is where politics begins and ends. Artists recognize that, to some degree, and comment on it.
Re: Prince - No, I do not think he has always been a conservative person. I believe Prince closed the door on being universally appealing (and, thus, practicing universal concepts) likely when his career began to tilt downwards a bit and the JW stuff was just a means to an end. Now he has a religious reason for feeling the way he feels. If the African American male's struggle to prove himself is evident in any other celebrity more than Prince, then I'll show my ass.

He's not a religious nutter. Liberals always deem those with strong Christian beliefs as crazy. Liberals aren't as open minded as they claim to be, especially those on the West and East coast of the U.S. They are only open to those who agree with them.Prince is like most Americans, liberal on some issues and conservative on others.

Prince just doesn't seem like a guy that likes compromises.
I don't think his association with the Jehovah's Witnesses has much to do with him being a "closet conservative", but just that their more uncompromising religious views appealed to him.
He can be a hypocrite, we all know that.
He also likes having a lot of money and some of his political statements reflect that.

He wouldn't pledge allegiance and look what happened to him!
Also, that one girl might be broke, but she sure is glad she doesn't live in Russia!
This song is a conservative mantra, and I always played it for my super-right-wing brother to get him to be quiet about Prince.

Everything I've ever read about Prince leads me to think he is a conservative and all the other stuff were just attention seeking antics. He has no kids after supposedly getting with dozens if not hundreds of chicks. The women who talk about him say that they really didn't bone. I doubt Prince is the guy that most fans think he is.

I read an article where someone, I forgot who, said that all she and Prince did when they were "together" was sat in the bed and watched TV or read a book or something. Not much else happened. I doubt he slept with groupies.

Yep I just forget who said it. I'm sure I'm paraphrasing what was really said but there were hints even earlier that Prince wasn't the "playboy" people thought he was then.

My manager (who is French) had some involvement in the organisation of the French leg of the SOTT tour. I forget the exact anecdote, but there was definitely some groupie lovin' going down.

Wasn't it the girl who appeared in MJ's "The Way You Make Me Feel" video? She hung out with Prince and said that there was no sex involved.

That must´ve been Anna Garcia. But keep in mind she was still underage when she lived with Prince, so that might be the real reason why nothing went on between them. They slept together but they didn´t have sex. At least that´s what she said. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
