fuck d'angelo, i said a long time ago that him dissing Prince was in bad form. Makes him look real stupid now that he ain't done shit for most of the last 15 years.

You math is off. Voodoo came out in 2000.

2 albums in a career or whatever. Anyway, it's been so long ago now I can't remember the specifics but we had a blowout on here about it. I tried searching for it but it's buried. And for those of you who think Prince has gotten lazy or whatever, just remember thats subjective, for us, and him. A songwriter never knows his best music, never, and they never know the impact or effect it will have on others. I remember Prince thinking some of his music was divinely inspired well into the Graffiti Bridge album when the execs he'd say that too started to think he was delusional. And songwriters have often, often written classics and thrown them away, had them as b sides or otherwise didn't think much of them. Anyway, I always say, P doesn't make any more 1999's but I'd still rather listen to a new Prince album than just about anyone else.

Anyway, to me, it's a little different as listeners to criticize prince than it is for other artists. Recently I read a story of how Jose Feliciano said Marvin Gaye sold out singing a 68 national anthem and said he should have done it more soulful. It just looks ugly to me, that's my taste and not everyones but I don't like that. I remember Arsenio Hall just getting his tv show and talking shit about smokey robinson, Tim Reid, his guest called him on it "just getting started and taking shots at legends". Do I make sense?

yeah he did, and I think he did a few times before that too. But it's not Jose's place as a Mexican to say what a black american should do, not as a mexican or an artist, it's just ugly and envious.

He was just jealous because he couldn't sing. He just sat there on the chair and lazingly played the anthem with chords he could've learned in his sleep. Jimi Hendrix kicked his ass the following year! lol

Actually, if I fremember correctly, Prince took offense to something that Voodoo's liner writer said about him and specifically the song "Untitled"... or even "Chicken Grease". And from what I remember, it wasn't that big of a deal. From what Quest told me around that time, there was no bad blood at all from D's side.

The issue got so out of hand that you can clearly see in the video for "Daisy Chain" in 2001 there were direct jabs at him. The "Chicken Grease" labeled Crisco can, the dude getting his hair braided with a cig in his mouth. Prince even says something to the effect of "lemme show them what the REAL Chicken Grease sounds like" and then does the chicken grease guitar line...

Just another case of misplaced anger on P's part from what I remember.

I think it's all good now, since Prince is always around Qyesto and then there was that rumor that P was gonna be on the upcoming album.

Meh.

Those liner notes is what atrated it as mentioned as well. Prince even repsonded with that remix of Undisputed lyrics change aimed at 2uest and them. Then he showed and proved with TRC and took D's ex, Angie Stone to duet with You Make My Sunshine etc...hell, even Shelby was one of the Soulquarians who sang on the Voodoo tour lol.....

.

[Edited 8/20/11 9:12am]

I doubt the Angie Stone connection was premeditated by whatever was going on. Prince already had a relationship with Angie from back in the 80's. She co-wrote Jill Jones b-side track 'Baby Cries(Ay-Yah)' and Prince reportedly gave Angie some furniture for her apartment, purple of course.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Back in the late 80's when Jill Jones CD was released. Angie Stone mentioned this stuff in a short article in Vibe ages ago.

Jose's "place as a Mexican"?

First of all, Jose Feliciano is not Mexican.

He's Puerto Rican.

That means he's also American.

Second, he was and is a professional musician with a career longer than most orgers have been alive. He can sing in at least two languages and play amazing guitar in several genres.

He was an international superstar when Prince was only 8 years old.

On top of that, he does it without being able to see.

Third, he wasn't just talking about what someone else should do.

The incident in question---from Wikipedia:

"In October 1968, at the height of protests against the Vietnam War, Feliciano was given the opportunity by Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner"[9] at Tiger Stadium in Detroit during Game 5 pregame ceremonies of the 1968 World Series. His highly personalized, slow, latin jazz performance proved highly controversial. As a result of his unusual delivery, many radio stations refused to play his songs, and his career was stalled for almost three years."

At the time, many artists protested against the Vietnam War and suffered greatly for it. (M. Ali may be the best example of this.)

So, if Jose Feliciano wants to comment about a peer or colleague, who's to say that he can't?

batman guitar

Some people tell me I've got great legs...

I almost forget that was during the time of social unrest in this country. I can see why Jose criticized him but Motown artists were always told to "do this to make money". They weren't allowed to take a stance on anything. I'm sure Marvin bristled at doing the anthem at the time especially during all that madness. That's why he asserted himself as "anti-establishment" after 1970.

I wasn't implying anything sexual. Just saying she got around. I read on her history lol I never saw a Prince mention like that (around the '80s) so it was refreshing to read that bit.

I just looked this up on youtube. No wonder he had to lay off his employees. He broke the bank with the funds on this video.
