I had originally included James but there's so many artists I've gotten into recently that he's low on the list now. neutral

someone is gonna hate me now...

but I have never been a big fan of James.

He is OK - not my fave.

I have some compilation albums, I never listen to those..

top 5:

1a. Marvin Gaye

1b. Prince

2. The Beatles

3. Keith Urban

4. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

5. David or Jimmy Ruffin

to be fair after 1a and 1b its not in any kind of order really. after Marvin and Prince its pretty much a tie between a long list of artists/bands

Of performing live artists, he is in my top 3 and maybe #1, but in general it is too hard to decide even the top 5 consindering all recordings and all perfomances so far and still to come. The times and moods are changing so maybe I have to live another 47 years to decide. smile The best music will live forever and that's why I rate these artists high:

Ray Charles

Billie Holliday

Otis Redding

Miles Davies

Dusty Springfield

I enjoy their recordings anytime.

Actually, I have seen James Brown on the stage of Pori in 1995. It was not a dissappointment but not such a dynamite as his recordings are to me. He was in a bad mood and really pissed off, because the organizers couldn't arrange the correct hair spray for him at the first hand.biggrin Life is....

Hello!

You really rate Todd Rundgren above Prince, David Bowie and Brian Eno in terms of musical genius?

I know he is a special talent, but is he really more gifted?

That's a pretty great list though!! Nice wink

I don't think of music in that way. I like Prince, Sly, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, The Stones, Zappa, Dylan, Fela Kuti... They're all great in their own right.
But I did not spend hours waiting and a small fortune to see the Stones in Paradiso backbin 95. Prince is the only one I do that for. So in that respect he is nr. 1.
