Errr...the new (ie. few months old) digital garden is still open (unless the cache feature on my browser is very advanced )
Though technically it's possible in some corners of the internet, you should never buy the unofficial releases that are listed there because the money doesn't go to the artists - where it should go - who made the music that you're enjoying (and AFAIK generally doesn't even go to the fans who spend countless hours improving the sound quality, doing the artwork, etc...) Your money, more often than not, will end up with the last people who should be compensated.
It is possible to listen to the music listed at TDG, but you need to find and download the releases you're interested in yourself, as you can't ask on fan sites like this one and, as per the disclaimer on the front page, you definitely can't ask at the site itself.
That said, The Digital Garden is a great resource for learning about what's out there. Every release (at least that I've ever seen) has had a unique catalogue number, which is interesting. It's all very organised.
