Let's Go Crazy is not quite your typical 80s pop rock song.

Nothing about that album was typical at that time. Just because it sold a bunch of copies doesn't mean it was "mainstream". If anything, it changed the mainstream, made the mainstream come to it.

Very true. biggrin

And seriously if you was 19 in 1984, you wouldn't come on this board 27 years later claiming it was too mainstream. We get it, you're a 19-year-old kid who supposedly like Prince's "raw" stuff but technically Purple Rain was just as raw lyrically and musically. Honestly, think about it, 1984. Did anything sound like it? Seriously, compare the album to, say, Victory or Like a Virgin or Private Dancer. Can you honestly say it was that mainstream especially with WHAT was considered mainstream in fucking 1984? I was born that year. Go back to the musical and Hollywood events of 1984 and then compare it to Purple Rain and see if your thoughts actually stick after that. Just try it. Don't try to assert that you know in your heart cause I honestly don't think you know. You're just saying it to see what our reactions would be. But seriously, have you ever even think about what was going on in 1984. And I'm more of a casual Prince fan so it's not a Prince fam rant. lol

by mainstream he means, "popular". nothing matters but sales to him. if it has high sales, its mainstream and therefor unlistenable

That's why he don't listen to Thriller. lol It's interesting to note PR is the only Prince album to do over 10 million and it's one of the few albums he DON'T listen to...yet he DOES listen to... good God... this guy confuses me! doh! lol

Or has he played it enough? lol I guess he thinks it's cool to say he don't listen to Purple Rain because it's "too mainstream" because that gives him kudos as him doing something different like having green socks when everyone is wearing white because white socks are "too mainstream". lol

Sorry, but that's honestly ridiculous.

It seems like you're trying too hard to be 'hipster'? I mean, you may genuinely not like the album for the music alone but disliking it just for the hype it's recieved since released is idiotic.

It doesn't make any difference if an album in general has sold ten copies or ten million -- it has nothing at all to do with the quality .. and the music alone from the Purple Rain era is fucking fantastic in my opinion nod

The title is: "Am I The Only Person Who Doesn't Listen To Purple Rain Because It Seems Too...Mainstream?" neutral
Good thing you only listen to it in June and November though. The other months are way too mainstream!

The first sentence is "I barely listen to this album".

I don't think it's too mainstream at all. Diamonds & Pearls is too mainstream, not Purple Rain

the music is just too electric

this era I have a good number of playlists that include long versions, unreleased, proteges, Bsides etc I never get tired of that sound

I agree with this assessment because Nikki and Computer Blue are def not mainstream and you hit the nail on the head with D&P. Talk about a most high sell out FOR the mainstream. Yes he somewhat changed his sound and content with Rain but his vision was still there, as well as the out there-ness of it that was Prince. D&P could have been made by David Foster and Friends inho.

Guys, I'm not calling the music on Purple Rain mainstream at all. I do know before Purple Rain, no album sounded like it, I know that. I'm calling Purple Rain mainstream because it appealed to everyone. Like everyone knows Prince for Purple Rain. The music has nothing to do with it.Ya know?

I don't know, maybe I'm just crazy, who knows. It's like Wiz Khalifa, when he was underground I listened to his music daily. But he became mainstream with "Black and Yellow" and the Rolling Papers album. Everyone knows him for that song and album. But I'm not saying it's a bad album. It's good album actually.

I don't hate the album, I just barely listen to it. And when I do listen to it, I enjoy it.

Your thread title alludes to the music not that it "brought" him to the mainstream. Especially since even if it was one of the most experiemntal pieces of music ala' lest's say Capt Beefheart, what difference would it make if the masses woke up and jumped on as a fan? However, since you just explained it more thoroughly and differently, I see what you mean. Its like after PR, everybody knew who he was/was into him. Although I think that began with 1999, Purple Rain it really brought folks on board.

Given that I do listen to it and love it even if

I don't see how that's contradictory. You can absolutely recognize that "Purple Rain" is well-crafted and feel it's the better disc even if it isn't your own first choice as far as Prince music goes. To be honest I somewhat agree with Tyler on this. I think that out of Thriller and Purple Rain, PR is the better one by far, but I personally don't listen to it because I'm bored by it, I've heard it way too many times, and it's essentially "Prince-Lite", or Prince watered down for the masses.

I know I'll get slaughtered for this, but I've honestly never thought "Thriller" was MJ's best work, either. boxed I think that award should go to either "Off the Wall" or "Dangerous".

I almost never listened to Thriller, and when I did the songs I really had any enthusiasm for were "Baby Be Mine", "Wanna Be Startin Something", "P.Y.T." and "The Lady in My Life". Admittedly "Billie Jean is a fucking amazing song, but hearing it constantly over the years killed off any appreciation I had for it, and I actually think "Beat It" is overrated and was never really that good to begin with, although I can appreciate and respect the positive message in the song itself.

You know what was totally, absolutely and completely underrated? Blood On the Dancefloor. I mean, I know it wasn't like this full album but it was genius in my opinion. All those five songs: Blood On the Dancefloor, Is It Scary, Morphine, Ghost, Supafly Sister. Pure genius. I think Ghost is completely on Thriller's level, possibly even better.

..I love this thread. Since I'm a old timer that can remember the fantastic year of Orwell I'll add my 2 cents..

Maybe 'mainstream' is a tight word..I'd say "P.R" was a 'popular crossover' record. The film sold the record..the record promoted the film (just like "Superfly" in the early 70's). Everything worked

out hand in hand.

We have to admit (for those that were there) "1999" opened the floodgates for what was about to happen. MTV, radio and the media started to question and jump on the 'purple jockstrap'. Everything happened at the right time. P had a winning formula & he couldn't lose.

P has even said it himself in countless interviews. He saw some people in the 1984-85 audience that he had never seen before..and he knew he would never see again once the hype died down.

As much as I love the soundtrack, I can't listen to it. Never bought it on CD or cassette either.

I think the last time I listened to it was the day "A.T.W.I.A.D" came out. It's been packed away

since (WITH the poster). wink
