Showing Prince how he can get a new sound.

Remember, back in the day, when Wendy and Lisa hipped Prince to the Beatles, as well as other music? Then he was hipped to jazz and his sound changed, became better--we had great albums and interesting gems of the highest art.

Prince is in a hole, his sound is stale, nobody wants to hear his new stuff. What he needs is to listen to different cultural musics and get a new sound. Let me suggest some.

Fela Kuti:

Now that's funk.

Tom Ze:

Caetano veloso:

Ennio Morricone:

Varese:

How the fuck did he do this shit in 1958? Every electronica artist should just quit now.

The vocal shit creeped me out.

Zappa:

Ah, pure beauty. Take notes P. Save your career.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Oh my god... all of those are old and retro! If Prince did any of that it would be retro in a conservative way! No no no no no.

Nothing wrong with retro, but either way... Want something new?

Here's a bit of genius by Matias Aguayo:

I don't get it. This track sounds limited to just a portion of the creativity of just the percussion of "Schoolyard", much less the other startling instrumentation and the idea for the "Schoolyard" song narrative itself... and that was 1991!

maybe I need to listen in headphones?

I don't get why the Matias Aguayo track is a NEW sound? It also seems to be a cultural historical throwback done in a minimal way.

It's a cool video though but cant' compare to this:

The much maligned song "Everybody Loves Me" is more insane and different for Prince than these posted examples. And I think it's much maligned because it's actually way out there in intention and sound.

Prince's past sounds inspired me and a friend to record this just for fun:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/98025/LADY%20PRINCE%20FINAL%20MIX%20MASTERED.mp3.zip

I included influence from Days of Wild, Rave Into the Joy Fantastic, Slave in the sound of it.

Wow You sure put a lot of work into this post, especially about a man who has nothing to prove anymore after 30 years and doesn't give a shit. lol

Actually, if he keeps putting out albums then he certainly does have something to prove.

He has released ~an album per year since the beginning and still strives to. You don't see 30 year vets do that aside from P.

yes and I've enjoyed many gems from those releases and also dismiss the ones I'm not feeling. so i guess from my standpoint I'm satisfied with his overall catalog. To me the challenge is for those churning out the music/noise that's out now, topping the charts, to come up with a new sound. so to me its not Prince's burden anymore, but that's coming from me who continues to enjoy his work
