Prince is More Like Jeff Beck than Jimi Hendrix...?

I've always understood the Hendrix comparisons... They're obvious.

BUT, whenever I listen Jeff Beck, I hear the influence on Prince much stronger than I do with Jimi.

Not sure why... I thinks it's because Jeff always gets such A wide range of expressive tones like Prince does.... Anyways, just a thought....

No, Santana.

That's who Prince always namechecks when the subject comes up.

I hear all of them in his playing at times.... And that's a pretty BIG compliment.

I'm not saying anything other than that I read him mentioning Carlos specifically.

"People compare me to Hendrix but I'm more like Santana. Carlos played prettier."

Not an exact quote. But close.

I was listening to his solo on "My Love Is Forever", and it sounded so like Santana.

Yeah... Prince has some straight up Carlos moments for sure.

Bottom line is, Prince one one of the more versatile guitarists around & he's been influenced by all the best. I mentioned the Jeff Beck thing because I had never really heard him mentioned as an influence before, but I was listening to some Jeff Beck live (amazing BTW) and I could swear I was listening to Prince at times...

PEACE.

Prince plays like Jimi on "Temptation".

He plays like Carlos on "My Love Is Forever" and "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man".

I was just talking about this with someone the other day, but....

Y'all do know Jimi could play like Santana, right? Anyone ever buy the Bold As Love album? lol. Anyone ever heard "Third Stone From the Sun"? Jimi wasn't all power chords and flaming guitars.

Wasn't trying to really start a "greatest guitarist " debate. Those conversations are pointless... I dig them all... And, Yes, I own "Bold as Love" & "Are You Experienced". Both great... IMO, Jimi sounds nothing like Carlos though. Even on "Third Stone From the Sun", it's the rhythm section that's doing a "Black Magic Woman" riff, but the lead guitar is all Jimi feedback & trippiness.

Carlos said at one point Jimi wanted to join his band. After hearing that, Carlos said he would have dropped the guitar and would have played something else. He said Jimi (and his guitar playing) would have dominated that group.

Still would have been cool to hear.

The solo when he says "Strange, beautiful..." is very Santana, to me. Very "Soul Sacrifice"...

Also, for Jimi, get Band of Gypsys... Has the stellar "Machine Gun" jam on it...

i don't care what anyone says, Prince included, he has more of hendrix in him than any other guitarist. His big head kept him from saying it for a while but I don't pay attention to what people say, but what people do. Also, I think his tone is often distinctively his own, a crackling sort of sound and his rhythm playing is something I could always pick out.

The influence of Carlos Santana can easily be heard in Prince's guitar playing, especially if you've heard the two live. The Jimi Hendrix comparison is a little exaggerated and somewhat based on the fact that they are both black guitarists. Prince is a great guitarist and has probably been influenced by many of the guitar legends that came before him. However, Carlos Santana seems to have had a major influence on Prince. Aside from that, Prince's guitar playing has some signatures that are unique to only him.
