I'm not sure, but you should definitely ask him. Find out where his next performance is, charge the stage, and demand that he gives you an immediate answer.
Then report back to us, as we're dying to know. time flies.

maybe he didn't hear what he is waiting for yet.

He will say he performs live versions of other people's hit songs during a live show. He will say other people cover his hits and record them with the intent to sell it.
To me there is a clear difference, and reading between the lines of his recent statements about the topic, that's the conclusion I have drawn.

He is? Nooooooooo waaaay REALLY?

'That' = Prince's greater depth in understanding the definitions of the english language than most people...i.e. Prince has never 'covered' anyone...He reinvents other artist's songs...as in placing the "PRINCE" stamp on the song's envelope so that when he drops it in the mailbox every postman knows without hesitation or misunderstanding to deliver the contents of the envelope to Paisley Park...because he now owns the rights to his reinvention of the song...a 'cover' band plays other artists songs just like the other artists...

everydays a winding road betcha by golly wow i cant make you love me lalala means i love you one of us purple house(ok i will give him this one since it was for a tribute)
but these are all ones he recorded to sell. I wish an interviewer would ask him that question. He is a hypocrit. but then again he always has been so I guess its nothing new

I think he's often refering to the random folks that post covers of his songs on youtube. Anybody can do a cover without permission. I can see why that bothers him.

not to mention
A case of U Crimson and Clover
He's basically a hypocrite. People posting covers of him on youtube isnt going to hurt his sales in anyway. If you cover others, don't whine about others covering you.

Not so fast.
Not all artists feel like Prince does about people covering their music. A lot don't mind. So if Prince covers their work and they don't care how is that hypocritical? "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No, he specifically mentioned how he doesn't mind fans singing his songs. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Maybe he gets permission off the other artists before he covers their songs? (even although he doesn't need it legally) and he just gets pissed off when others cover his songs without his permission / blessing?

This is pretty much what I'm saying. I think it's basically about him not appreciating it when an artist's wishes aren't respected, whatever those wishes may be. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

He also coverd "Back in the USSR" and called it "Guitar", and his cover of "American Woman" is named "Redhead Stepchild".

That seems to contradict the fact that he sued a mom for posting a video of her daughter dancing to little red corvette?

Did he drop that case...I dont rememer hearing about it but it would have been mentioned alot more if it went ahead
Tad harsh is an understatement.

I think this is the point exactly. RIP
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The real question is why he feels the need to do so many covers!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Because his stupid faith forbids him to perform all his great dirty songs.
I would LOVE to see and hear him play songs like head and sexy mf again.

Nonsense.
Covering songs in concert is just as much selling other people's songs.
Just as much making money off other people's work.

I thought about that too, but in that case I wonder about his Come Together, Foxy Lady and Villanova Junction covers. It would be a bit hard for him to get permission from John Lennon or Jimi Hendrix, right?
And see this thread about the Gap Band too: http://prince.org/msg/7/364170 I doubt Prince got permission from the Gap Band to do their Outstanding.
And I would say playing a cover live isn't any different than releasing it as Prince gets paid for his time on stage, so he basically gets paid for the covers he's playing in that time. But it's up to Prince what he thinks on that, and I guess he likes double standards a lot
What's with the Kiss cover on Happy Feet by the way? He must have approved of that as he was personally involved in that movie by writing Song of the Heart, not? You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Yeah but he's not talking about people performing stuff live at a concert. He's against people recording and selling without permission. There's a difference. RIP
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
What's the difference then really? That in one case you sell the song by performing it live and in the other by selling copies of it?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He does that as well, plus I'm very sure that while the copyright is in effect people have to get permission AND pay a varying sum.
