Are Prince fans weird? Are Prince fans like, totally wacko, eccentric, offbeat or anything? Do you think that Prince fans are crazy? I saw one fan at the MSG show in Feb who was dressed like Prince head to toe and met a lot of random hipster purple hippies. Are we the weirdest group of fans out there for any artist? Trolls be gone!

YES. You just have to find out in what way. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Prince fans are not weird we're actually some of the most unique, intelligent people on the planet. We most definitely know brilliant music when we hear it, but we can be impatient at times

Weird? Probably. One things for certain, we like to piss and moan and bitch every fucking chance we get.

Wow, even her is Purple! -Prince should ask fans to each bring a purple:balloons: to the open festivals. People can let them go around the Purple Rain song and video taped it. -All the Prince Fans I know are classy people so far. Well, except for one person but that is a good ratio.

The Cure fans
Spice Girls fans
Oasis fans
Madonna fans
Dolly Parton fans
These are actual fans in their actual gear. So who's the weirdest?
The answer is of course Oasis fans. Because the music sucks.
At least Prince fans listen to good music.

If you're a fam, then you're weird. If you're a hater like Bart, then you're weirder.

Some idiots are so fucking deluded that if Prince asked them to turn up smeared head to foot in dog shit then they would do it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
See, here's where I might be kinda fammy, because I'd show up in purple and don't see anything particularly weird or creepy about it. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

Nothing particularly strange in turning up dressed in purple if that is what you choose to do.
What I meant was (and should have clarified) that certain loonies would do anything that Prince told them to do.

Yeah, Prince fans who dress like him are not the weird ones, it's the ones who believe EVERYTHING he says. And I mean EVERYTHING.

And worship, everything he puts out, says, does, shits etc etc. Those "fans" are not weird, they are scary, however, i'm glad we have them, because they give everyone else someone to laugh at.

As I'm sure most of you know by now, Prince and MJ are my equal two favorite artists of all time.
Now I used to be active in the MJ fan community as well as here. Mostly in the late 90s and early 00's. I went to a MJ fan party once in London. Jeffrey Daniels was there speaking, Adrian Grant, peopel like that. Think Michael may have left a message for the fans about the event that was played over the speakers. Navi the MJ impersonator was there, there was a singing contest, that sort of thing. There's some weird people in the MJ fan community for sure.
Anyway I was thinking recently about something that I read concerning Morrissey attacking his fanbase and one of his main fansites for whatever reason, and there was this theory that fanbases tend to take on the traits of their idol in many ways and something clicked in my head about it.
Basically, I had a hard time with a lot of MJ forums (before he died) because, basically, there was this overwhelming flow of what I only describe as the kind of behaviour you expect from young teenage fans. Lots of sparkly glittery OTT signatures with pictures of Michael, lots of discussion about how hot he was, lots of tyPinG lYK diZZ oMG SMILEY FACE! kind of thing. Basically, think your average teenager's myspace page circa 2006 and you get the picture. Shit gets annoying really fast.
The kicker? A solid proportion of these people WERE NOT TEENS. They were in their 30s and 40s. Now, if it can be said fanbases take on the traits of their idol then that makes this kind of thing extremely logical. Michael of course was in a state of arrested development himself, the fixation on childhood and the innocence of it. But with Michael, his stellar talent made it endearing and you completely understood the psychological reasoning for it (lack of childhood, superstar since pre-puberty) etc. Of course when the fanbase mimics that behaviour it's not endearing at all, it's just really fucking annoying.
So, to bring it back to the topic, are Prince fans weird? Well, we might well seem weird to outsiders who think Prince is weird himself. But that perspective tends to come from people who don't actually know much about Prince at all. They tend to know the bigger hits and music vids and actually, very little about his supreme musical talent as an instrumentalist and songwriter with incredible range. Look at any pop-culture parody of Prince and they always portray him from the 1999/Purple Rain era, focusing on frilly outfits, purple trenchcoats, big hair, etc. Whereas we know that that era and style lasted less than 3 years, we know all the different eras and how they differentiate in both style and sound. As far as the traits we take on from him, we're clearly mostly very sexual and sexually liberal (a look through the General Discussion forum will show that much ), we're quite musically educated in a wide variety of styles and genres, like Prince, and we're generally not bound specifically to religion but spiritual and believe in things from a wide variety of ideologies, like pre-JW Prince.
For me one of the beauties of being a Prince fan is that his own diversity as an artist has led to an extremely diverse fanbase. We're all so different here but share something in common. I haven't seen that in any other major fanbase of any artist and certainly not massively commercial succesful artists. You pretty much know what to expect when dealing with hardcore Elvis fans, or Springsteen fans, or Madonna fans, you know? Definitely not the case with us!

Thank you for this post, it's such an interesting reflection. I am definitely weird. But very happy with that. And Prince actually had something to do with it. I started being a fan in 1989-1990, when I was beginning my teen years. I don't know how it was like in the States or in other countries, but here being a Prince fan was actually being the weirdest, in terms of musical tastes, and also being a somewhat "sissy", etc. I can tell that loving Prince music set me apart from many people, who openly rejected him. Far from trying to fit in, I reacted defending my favourite artist. And, this is my main point, I learnt a lot to respect and appreciate myself thanks to Prince. I learnt that being different was nothing bad, and I think the sense of individuality and freedom that I've gained with the years really has something to do with my Prince obsession in a completely negative environment. Fighting against the majority is something that lasts all life, I'm afraid, but the fight can be worthy if you remain true to yourself. So, if I'm weird, happy with that.

That is a possibility, I dated a Gemini for 6 yrs, but we both agree that I am the truly split one, altough I am Sagittarian, I was fondly named 1 & 2, even my current GF is beginning to mention it...I guess it is a good way of double dating... If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Totally agree, but they would reason that they wanted the front of the stage to themselves and the flies... If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
