I wouldn't be surprised if Prince is a fan of Blow by Blow and Wired. Just because he never mentioned it in an interview doesn't mean he hasn't heard it.

i don't care what anyone says, Prince included, he has more of hendrix in him than any other guitarist. His big head kept him from saying it for a while but I don't pay attention to what people say, but what people do. Also, I think his tone is often distinctively his own, a crackling sort of sound and his rhythm playing is something I could always pick out.

I know Prince likes to downplay his influence, but in this case I do believe him. I'd say he's smart for not feeding the Jimi comparisons.

Anyway, if there's anybody ALIVE who should be the sole heir to Jimi Hendrix legacy, it should be Jesse Johnson not Prince.

The rawness of Hendrix

The sweetness of Santana

what about Eddie Hazel?

The new prince does have alot of Jeff Beck too, but prince is always getting inspiration from many different guitarists.

I guess you could say "Beck's Bolero" sounds a bit like some P playing - at least, the beginning of it does, the same repeated riff sounds kind of similar to his playing on the Purple Rain tour, I think?

It's not a very good comparison, but then again I do not think Jeff Beck is in Prince's playing very much if at all...

Edit: Also I guess "You Shook Me" could sound similar to something P did, lol. But that's not really stylistically very Beck anyway.

well if prince was serious about avoiding those comparisons he would not have ever worn the boa's, never made the same expressions with his face when he played, never stolen licks wholepart from Jimi, what Prince says and does are usually different, i put no stock in his mouth.

I love that Prince don't mention his guitar influences. I think he emulates all of them to an extent. Like if you add the raw syncopation of Hendrix, the electric blues of Beck, the emotional soul of Hazel and Ernie Isley, the peaceful and hard boiled melodies of Santana, the rugged sound of Rundgren, put them all into a blender and add a little purple flavor, you get Prince. lol

It comes out more in his live solos I think... I'm not trying to deny the Hendrix or Santana influences at all, they're fairly obvious & have been discussed many times.

However, Prince, more & more, has been using his volume pedal & playing with harmonics & bending notes to get sounds that are not traditional guitar sounds and this style just reminds me more of Beck than the other two... Maybe it's just me.

I don't hear any Jeff Beck in P's playing. Beck always went for that out of phase, slighty distorted raw Fender sound. And he always bent his notes out and right back in pitch with his bar.

P's sound is a little more processed and very "rack/stompbox" sounding...(not saying that's a bad thing). He also uses the bar in a different way also (and I wish he would stop using it).

I hear more Ernie Isley than Eddie Hazel in P's playing also. P's lyrical notes, flange, bends and

even tone pay more homage to Ernie and Carlos than Eddie. Eddie's tone changed from record to record, studio to live and it's hard to pinpoint.

When I hear the solos in "Pink Cashmere" or some of the solos off of the "Symbol" record, it reminds me of Ernie.

I also chuckled as Jeff said in an interview last month, admittedly with a little grin from himself, that picks were for "beginners".

Actually, Jeff Beck loves Prince's guitar playing.

They respect each other's "mastery"...

Yes we all know that everybody loves Prince.

As usual though it's horses for courses and apples and oranges. Who. Fucking. Cares. Really.

On John McLaughlin, Beck said, "I'd say he was the best guitarist alive."

Hendrix said that Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) was his favourite guitar player.

Prince says that, "Everybody loves me."

My favourite is Brian May (always sounds like the first time to me).

Everybody has their heroes, everybody has their influences. Everybody is influence by everything, whether they're trying to immitate it or ignore it.

But anyway, Prince is nothing like Beck. If Prince is like anybody then it's a shame as it's far better to innovate than immitate.

So anyway on a lighter note, HMV was looted during the London riots yet Cher Lloyd's single was still to be found on the shelf untouched.

Every artist imitate others in some degree. Some are just inspired by more different artists than others. That often makes them original. Music is a language.

I'm not sure, I think I believe that occasionally something comes along that truly is original. Not saying that many people may not have already thought of it either simultaneously or beforehand. Makes you wonder how many things we may be missing due to people not getting their work out there into the domain.

Saying that sometimes you get some right cracking albums appear that obviously have had no influence on the other. Night at the Opera and Wish You Were Here (albeit rather old, 1975) being prime examples. Both recorded in the studio at the same time. Same studio aswell if I remember rightly. Not sure what the fuck that has to do with the original post though.

I agree with that, but I don't think it's the case in regards to Prince's guitar playing. If anything, I prefer the fact Prince is so referential in his playing (with the obvious nods) because I really enjoy his interpretation. The styles and flavors he combines in his music are so lush that it's difficult to think that it's as simple as saying, "He's inspired by Jimi." Well, I don't think Prince has ever released something Hendrix would even touch except MAYBE The Undertaker...

Iloveyouanie Brian May is great, great sound, great tone but is

it fair to admit that he is much better in studio then live?

It's interresting how much one will discover of obvious influences when one hear enough music. Especially if you're also studying the music and seeing it in historical, geographical and cultural context while listening to it. I'm not saying that everyone is copying, but is inspired by. Nothing is 100% original. Prince does have alot that to me sounds very uniqe, but after listening to his favourite artists for many years, I've also got the understanding of where some of it comes from in some degree. Steal from one person and you're a copycat, "steal" from 1000 and most people won't recognize where you got it from.

You want a psychedelia Santana record? Then get "Santana III".

Definetly a 'smoke a joint and kick back with headphones' record. Neal Schon also trades fast licks back and forth with Carlos on this one. Great record.
