I think he perfectly deserves whatever praise and awards he receives as a composer, particularly for anything from "Older" and earlier. I think he's quite obviously underrated as a musician. Most people don't even know he plays multiple instruments proficiently. [Edited 8/10/11 8:50am]

This troll thread isn't very subtle, 4/10.

Troll thread? What? Since when are comparison threads troll threads?
That word gets thrown around too loosely around here.

Wow...that's quite an accolade for Prince to be rated above Madonna and MJ...i agree though.

is this an attempt to practice humour ?

Nope. | |

I agree with you on that.

While i agree that Prince hasn't had as big an impact on funk music as James Brown, Parliment or Sly Stone, P is still regarded as one of the best funk artists. His name is usually among the top 10 or top 20 or so funk artists and he has also been voted as one of the best funk guitarists. Considering that a funk legend like George Clinton covered Erotic City (a funk song after all), it shows that P has made an impact as a funk artist, even though his impact on funk is not as big as George, JB or Sly. Plus Prince can play some funky bass
Interesting thread, i haven't heard George Michael's work in depth so i can't answer as to who has the better albums. George is probably the better singer and Prince is better in the musicianship department. [Edited 8/10/11 10:38am]

I'm a huge fan of both, but I don't see how anyone can compare the two. They are both great singers and songwriters, but they are very different artists. I think both are extremely talented musicians.

I suppose that same opinion holds for a lot of people concerning Prince given his low record sales. Either way it would leave those people as irrelevent to the question of under/overrated.

I've had posted on the org before..however there are more similarities than people here realise. Not just musically...
1. GM readily admits his fondness for Prince during his own Faith period, and has admitted recently (in the 2011 re-release of Faith) how much the album sounds like Prince in some areas.
2. Both had significant contractual arguements with their record companies in the early 90's
3. After bitter arguements with their record labels, both released their Freedom albums in 1996. (GM with Older and P with Emancipation. The last track on emancipation is the title track, and the last track on Older is Free...
4. Both of them in 1996 released covers of "I Can't Make You Love Me" (GM released a live version of this in 1996 on the Older Single EP)
5. Both artists have also had complete creative control of their output - with both men having "Written, Arranged and Produced by" on all their albums.

you're asking this question on a Prince fansite?

GM wrote "I can't make you love me" as far as I am aware...

The truth is, it's comparing apples to oranges. Two different artists. And I like both of them. That said..to me, the promise and composition of Faith never bared the fruit I expected in Michael's followup albums. It's as if he either didn't write the songs on Faith, or couldn't write songs as well as he did on Faith, in his later albums. Prince, on the other hand, has shown me time and again he is no fluke. The brilliance of 1999/Purple Rain didn't fade with his subsequent releases. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

Good topic. Going back to the 80's, Prince was the 1st one I saw of the two. But I heard GM sing 1st. I remember when my cousins told me that GM was gay and I was heart-broken. (I think my cousin might of known someone that dated GM back in the 80's). So, I started to look at GM like a girl. He sings very well. -But to look at all the time that has passed and all the albums of both artists, I have to go with Prince because he just doesn't give up. I thinke GM gave up somewhere.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So, because he was gay, you started to look at him like a girl?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
^ Yeah because I wanted a 'pre-teen' music idol, a heart-throb. If he was gay, my fantasies would be a waste. -Sometimes I look back at GM's career and I think about a lot of wasted time on his part.
-I still would rather pick Prince in the long run, he has more energy.

smoothcriminal is a MJ stan.... its to be expected. I wonder does MJ have any fan forums, the way he carries with his schtick. Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND Chaka Khan = FIRE Sade = WATER the ELEMENTS of MUSIC

Right? GM is gay but Prince is definitely a bigger "girl."

Shut up man. I've contributed to this forum more than you have with your fuckery.

Prince = WIND Chaka Khan = FIRE Sade = WATER the ELEMENTS of MUSIC

Yep. We all do. I'd have a pretty sad existence if I didn't.
