liveforlove - when was this?? I'm SOOO jealous! cry
You lucky, lucky thing.

I can't say I've actually MET Prince but one experience sticks out in my mind: it was at last year's Celebration, on the 3rd night. SUPERB funk set - one of the best P shows I've seen!

I was RIGHT near the front, when - all of a sudden - this trumpet heralds from the back. No-one knew what was going on. Suddenly, the crowd splits in two and Prince - like Moses in the Red Sea - walks through the crowd. He was like a funky Pied Piper, banging a cowbell, followed by the rest of the NPG. I've NEVER seen him look so funky.

Anyway, just as he approaches the stage, he goes RIGHT past me; I reached out and patted him on the shoulder! Apparently, my face was pure shock! eyepop (It was especially gratifying since my mate boasted, the previous night, how he'd stood right next to Prince in the cinema. I was in such a rush to see the film, I ran to get a seat. If I'd only waited 2 more minutes I'd have seen Prince! Grrr! But I got my own back the next night - my mate was very jealous!!!).

That, and the fact he's made the funky face at me a couple of times in his concerts. Too cool for words nod

Whats MET.

7 ish years ago - The last time in Dublin, after the first night.
a friend(loosely) who was well in with the Pod brought us down.
There was barely anyone in there - we met Tommy Barberella - who was really friendly and he chatted away.
A bouncer let us know that Prince was on his way in the back - we stood at the door - He walked in - Fiona nearly Fainted - He paused - I was dumbstruck - and that was it - Remeber this was a time before he was so accessible.
The following night - He played a great aftershow.
Remember thinking for a long time after - that up so close - with the make up and Glitter - that he looked just like a doll - or not humun - sounds funny when you see him now.
thats it... Felt like we met him at the time,,,

I did an interview with him for a national music magazine back in 1998, in Paisley Park. It's definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

It was a regular interview, one of the many that he gave that day. I remember being very excited and very skeptic about it (dont't forget it was the time he released New Power Soul!!!) at the same time.

And then he was, standing by the door, giving a handshake and inviting to sit down (it was in the same room in which some footage to "The Same December" video was shot). He started talking, sometimes saying funny things, sometimes straight silly, sometimes quite amusing. And the thing that came into my mind after the interview was: this guy really has got the charisma, aura around himself that makes you forget about the pretentious man who sits in front of you, who releases the boring New Power Soul and altogether acts sometimes strange. He is an enigmatic person and this is the image of Prince that will stay in my memory forever.

and one more thing - somewhere, in the middle of his sentence someone knocked on the door. I turned my head to the door expecting this person to enter the room. Prince however did not stop talking, he went on finishing his phrase. That meant I needed to forget about the person waiting outside the door and focus on what he was saying. Only when he finished the thought he said loudly "Come in" and a woman came in and gave him silently some papers to be signed which he did. Then she left and he continued the interview. A little dictator he is!!! smile

He picks and chooses who he will speak to. Some people who speak to him receive polite from a friendly Prince. Others who have spoken to him receive NO response.

I was working at an education center in L.A. when a student came through who worked for Prince. We exchanged information. No big deal, right? Well, about five months later, as the 2001 Hit n'Run tour was coming to a close, I got a call from Paisley Park. "We're looking for a video editor for the Celebration and your name showed up on my desk. Can you be here tomorrow?"

Well no, I couldn't, but I could be there the day after. And I was. That was the start of my 2-week odyssey with Prince.

The first time we spoke was on the phone. I was in the edit bay, and had been waiting a few hours for him to finish a meeting. When the phone rang, I expected it to be the staff person I'd been talking to all day. It wasn't.

"Hello?"
"Is this Chris?"
"Yes."
"Hi Chris, this is Prince."
Oh. Ma. God. I'm sitting in Paisley Park, talking on the phone to Prince. He gave me some instructions and I went to work.

A couple hours later I cross the hallway to the drinking fountain. As I head back to the bay, he is coming down the hallway. I take a seat back at the bay, and a few minutes later, he enters. He comes in with his hand extended and thanks me for coming. He was followed by the business associate he was meeting at the time. Prince's grip was firm, and he was very professional.

I cued up was he asked for, played it, and they left.

After a dinner break, I returned to PP to await further instructions. At about 10 p.m., Prince peeked around the corner, apologized for having me wait, and told me to come back the next day at four p.m. to get started.

I didn't have a car, so Prince asked Femi to give me a ride back to AmericInn. That was Day One. I met Prince, kept my cool, did the job, and lived through it!

The following day, I showed up as directed. After about ten minutes, I was told that Prince's schedule had changed, and was asked if I could come back the following week. So they shipped me back to L.A. with a return skedded for the following week.

On my return I did a few tasks. One night I went into the studio to tell Prince I was done with what he asked for. He was mixing a tune that I would come to recognize as "Last December" several months later. I also got to hear a lot of band rehearsal. Ultimately, not much editing took place. As he was finishing The Rainbow Children, rehearsing the band, and doing photo shoots, his involvement with editing took a bottom priority.

So my work ended before the Celebration began. Obviously I had dreams of it lasting much longer, but what a fucking awesome experience -- my first professional editing gig, and it was with the man I idolized for nearly 20 years. The staff was all great -- very friendly and welcoming people. At the end of the experience, I was most thrilled that I could now see Prince as just a man with a musical gift, and not the God I had created in my mind.

:nod:During the ona soundcheck in buffalo ny, prince asked how we liked the changes in the music and i said change is good, he said he liked that. He invited a bunch of us on stage during the sound check to sing the chorus to last december, he laughed at us becuase we could not sing. During the concert he choose me to come up on stage to dance, and he shook my hand at the end. During last years celebration, i stood right in front him and manny thru the workshop with tavis, i could here all the comments that he was making about what was being said. That was my experiences so far

I was there as well. Also got to go onstage for the Last December. During the Q&A, I asked him about Larry Graham performing with him.

Week later at the Cleveland soundcheck, I told him the Buffalo show was tight and he was towards me and said "it sho was." I also asked him if he was a Timberwolves (NBA Team)fan to which he said yes.

Me too! I got to hug him and kiss him on the cheek at the soundcheck in Detroit, March 6, 2002. Although we were never formally introduced, I asked for a hug and snuck a kiss, to which he replied "Hey, you only said a hug." When I asked, he said he had to ask Mani first, but I told him, it was fan love, nothing else, so he said okay. My goal is to one day sit down with him and ask some serious-always-wanted-to-know type questions. Like, is he right or left handed? What songs won't Warner let him sing? Stuff like that...

Vancouver, BC - ONA tour. I, and a handful of others, got to spend over 1 hour and 45 minutes talking to him at the afterconcert party after the club cleared out. Surprisingly, we never even discussed music. We talked about God, religion, the government structure, race, division / unity, the state of the world today and a lot else. It was a very spiritual evening had by all there. It started at about 2:15 am and ended just before 4 am. When I got home, I never felt so in touch with another spirit. He called us all 'brother' and 'sister' and that is how I honestly felt with him... he was like a brother... there was no 'Prince my Idol' talking it was 'Prince - the gift from above' speaking... and he spoke in volumes. He's truly a gift...

I met Prince twice during the celly of 2002, Me and two other girls got to come up to his Prowler, he was picking up one of his bodyguards, at the time, the two girls was asking his about the PJ party later that night and asked if he was going to dress for it, he smiled at me, I was so nervious, at the time, ( white girl dressed in brown slacks and a brown Pasily long sleeve shirt, how ever you spell it, sorry,) I also got to meet him later that week, I asked the bodyguard if I could shake his hand, he said sure, the bodyguard pecks Prince on the shoulder, Prince turned around with a big smile on his face and shakes my hand I told him thank you for inviting me to the celly, he said you are very welcome, and then I turned around and left.I was wearing 5inch heels and a black skirt with white pok-a dots, black sweater, white beret. I towered over him, I was surprised that I even got the words thank you, out of my mouth, I had a wonderful time at the celly 2002.

Long story short...I had the opportunity to meet with him and my (then) boss (5 people in the whole meeting including Prince) about 2 yrs ago at Paisley Park. I sat next to 'the man' in the conference room and he was very quiet and shy for the 1st 5 minutes of the meeting and then he just began to open up. Lots of discussions about the music biz and how shitty today's music is and how today's artists aren't positive roll models and so on. I decided to play devil's advocate and mention the fact that my father never saw P's music as a positive influence on my young life at the time and P. just said 'whatever'. What was really cool was that I made him laugh a few times and he was giving me five and leaning over to me telling me stuff. And with him and I being the only 'black' males in the meeting he kept giving me the 'listen to "the man" try to talk to 'us' brother' look. It was quite the surreal experience. Then he suggested we all go down to the studio to listen to new music. And he played some 'new' stuff he had just did (Pearls B4 The Swine and A Case Of U) and what was really trippy was that in the studio he had the music up WAY loud and I was the only one who was nodding my head getting into the stuff being played so he kept coming over to me yelling in my ear saying, "listen to this bass line" and "listen to her (Chaka) voice". It was crazy. It lasted for like 3 hours in the dead of winter in MPLS. An experience I waited 16 years for. I actually felt a sense of closure with that meeting...if that makes any sense.

Briefly. On the upper floor @ Glam Slam, he was standing by me leaning over the rail and looked over briefly and said "what's up." Walked by him later in the narrow hallway upstairs, leading 2 the dancefloor and bar, during the afterparty.
